Solid straight line in carpet??
« on: May 16, 2004, 12:02:38 pm »
Hi Guys

I have come across this situation twice in different flats.

same carpet, laid by the same people and on a biege carpet?

The first one was in a hallway from doorway to doorway about 2 inches wide about 1 foot long. The other was in a lounge about 2 foot long and agin about 2 inches wide.

I feel that this is a carpet fault but am open to other ideas?

The colour is a very light black colour.

Thanks for your expertise

Regards

Martin,

Could possibly be adhesive left by a tape which the dirt has stuck too.

Did it clean off?

Cheers,

Doug

Hi Martin,
Due to the width of the line the adhesive tape theory sounds very plausible. I've done quite a lot of work for manufacturers on thinner lines, this is oil in the yarn which doesn't  show when the carpet is laid but then attracts dirt over the next few weeks resulting in something resembling a soil filtration line.

Best Regards

I had a similar call out recently, new light colour wool loop pile. No problem on installation but black lines grew over the following weeks. These carpets are well known for dye loss, sometimes even from a freshwater rinse, but as I was working directly with the manufacturer to save them from an expensive replacement, I had permission to proceed regardless. I spotted the marks with Citrus Gel (the marks were oil from the loom rollers) and marks came out. Without the Gel the black was removed to reveal a yellow greasy line. Rinsed and neutralised the gel residues and rinsed again.

Easy to rectify staining, but be cautious about damaging carpet as indicated above. Test first.

Safe and happy cleaning:)

Hi

This may sound silly but I have actualy seen this sort of thing on many occasions

The black greasy marks may be from a 'boom truck' which has transfered to the carpet when the boom is inserted into the roll of carpet prior to lifting into a lorry/store etc.

Hope this helps

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your input.

The line appeared over the space of a few days, both times?

the second one only appeared after they had been back to tighten it up??
