Hi gents/ladies,

Just recently at a few jobs, the customer has asked me about the chemicals/fumes/spray caused whilst cleaning. For example I use an inline sprayer for presprays and this pumps out a certain amount of mist whilst doing it and various people have asked me why I haven't got a mask on, does it not make me feel unwell breathing it in all day, do I understand what might happen in the future from continued exposure?

It's a concern I now have that I hadn't really considered before. What are other peoples thoughts on this? Does everyone use a mask? Had any experience of ill health after repeated exposure.

I would welcome everyone's feedback because there are many of you who have been out there doing it for longer than I have and no doubt will have experiences.

I switched to using Microsplitters a couple of years ago purely for this reason.....having recently had cancer (not carpet cleaning related in any way) you don't want to be taking any chances when it comes to your health...particularly when your exposed everyday.

Another thing to consider are strains and pains from the repetitive nature of carpet and upholstery cleaning.

I don't know what product you are using. You should refer to the product label and COSSH Data Sheet from the Manufacturer. From this you should carry out a Risk Assesment, record the significant findings and use PPE as required.

If you aren't sure you should use a mask, IMO.
If you are using a chemical of any kind and you are getting 'bounce' from the spray you should allways wear one. You don't need a full chem mask with filters etc just a reasonable one should do.
But dont store it near your chems in the van, (as I did once) it will just absorb the chems around it and defeat the object!

I keep my mask in a sealed tupperware box.
