Varnish
« on: September 26, 2006, 04:27:04 pm »
Hi guys,

I just got a call from a lady saying that her wooden table has left stains on the  carpet under the legs that she presumes is varnish off the wood.. I havnt seen it but she says they're brownish marks, on a beige coloured carpet. I havnt come across this before. Before I go and look, is there a cure? Is this common? Could normal cleaning procedures remove it?

Thanks in advance
Mick

Furniture marks, probably due to the carpet being damp for some reason. Usually impossible to remove completely

It's pretty unusual for dye transfer to just 'appear'. As John says the carpet might by wet. I suggest you check to see if there are any pets in the house and if this is a new piece of furniture. The little darlings may have decided to scent mark the item with urine.

It is very difficult to remove if it is varnish, but I think more questions need to be asked first - maybe she has just had her carpets cleaned and they were not dry properly? I'm afraid a site visit might be the only way to resolve this.

Good luck

Chris

Could the carpet have been cleaned before and the furiture replaced before dry?

If the stains aren't too big it should be possible to retuft the damaged areas if they have some spare carpet or can take some tufts from somewhere.

Visited site... Its wood paint/dye, very orangey in colour. Multiple marks left from all the table legs (it was a set of tables). Carpet was never cleaned before. Perfect otherwise. Wool. The marks are there since the day after they put the tables there which was a year ago....(they werent too bothered just left the tables in place so stains not visible) Anyway, i tried a bit of Stain Pro but would not budge at all...... looks like permanent  ::)

They have some spare carpet left over so I suggested they get the marked bits replaced...

Hi,
if the tables REALLY did cause the marks , ::) and if they purchased furniture from one of the big stores, they would stand a very good chance of getting a new carpet from the shop.
It would be easy to check if the tables will stain that easily, get a dry cloth and rub part of the furniture. If dye comes out then they are telling the truth ! ;D
I recently came across a wooden framed suite that marked a dry carpet the moment it was moved, but it was cheap crap from the a market, and so no chance of compensation from supplier.

They agreed they should've gone back with the furniture I said it to them today but it was a year ago so too late now. No idea why the didn't  ::) The tables definitely did cause the marks I could see it for myself , they were square marks from the rim of the bottom of the legs. They took the tables out of the room but I asked to see one of them and it did match exactly in colour (the colour of the table & the colour of the stain). They bought them at a market. They did look kinda cheap actually..  :P
Didnt try the dry cloth test, but I'll know the next time!  :)
