TRUCKMOUNT or PORTABLE HWE ?
« on: September 26, 2006, 12:53:08 pm »
I often read on here, the benefits of using both truckmount and portable HWE machines.
It would be interesting to find out who uses what ?

I personally use a HWE machine...maybe this poll may make me change my mind ???

Bit of a silly question really, some use porty some use truckmount, both have their pros and cons, but at the end of the day both do the job perfectly
Hope this thread don't turn into another truck v porty, mine's bigger and better than yours debate. :)
For the record I use a porty..

Having recently purchased a truckmount I find that chemicals last longer, you spend more time actually cleaning (cleaning=dosh), the carpet is dry within an hour (I know this can be achieved with a portable but it takes more work). Finally if you employ people it increases the consistancy of a quality job.
Just my opinion anyway!

1 hour dry, ok are you actually puting any rinse onto the carpet?
What do you consider dry? touch or actually dry.
I can get them dry with air movers , but i doubt it very much without them.

I know this prpoably sounds daft, but here goes.

If we limit ourselves to efficiency by that I mean thoroughness of cleaning and drying times. If a portable does everything that a truckmount does why buy a truckmount?

They cost more, are more expensive to run and on some jobs they can't even be used.

I know that we don't want to get into the merits of truckmounts v portables, but surely merits are what it is all about.

Otherwise our client prospects should all use a hire machine !

Another point is, when your at a customers house with a porty they can actual see the quality of the machine working, where as if you have a TM all they see is a wand. Could be a HENRY on the end for all they know??

We've been using portables for years with no complaints. Are we prepared to fork out thousands for a TM - no way, never, too many restrictions!

I doubt they would think you have a HENRY at the end of the pipe.

I asked the question to attempt to ascertain what is seen as differences, you state to many restrictions, please share your views. It would help anyone who is juggling with the TM v Portable question.

Thanks

for what its worth i dont think most customers give a damn if its a porty or a t/m
i have both and also the dry cleaning sytem. the porty i try not to use because i find the t/m easier. but if i use the porty the customer cannot see any difference in cleaning quality. we all do the job of cleaning carpets regard;ess what we use and i think the most if not all  on here do  professional work regardless what system we use

Portable carpet cleaning machines today are designed to do an excellent job and they do. Personally I use a truckmount. When I first got it I used to carry the portable in the van just in case. Not now, I have had to use it once in 2 years on a school where I couldn't reach the last classroom with my hoses. I would never go back to using a portable.

I  along with others tried out the Rotovac on a portable at Alltec open day th and it certainly cleaned the carpet no problems at all.  With the wand it was hard work.

If you are just using a Wand I would say a Truckmounts wins.

If your just using a wand I think you would struggle to get any results at all. I find wands work much better with TM or porty.

to say the customer doesnt care what machine you use is only true until they are informed about the choice.

given all the relevant information most customers would chose a T/M.

to say that the quality of the cleaning is the same with a T/m or a portable might be true but we don't all compete on quality.

drying times, IAQ, speed, etc are all considering factors and no matter what people think a T/m will always come out on top.

and I've heard all the excuses, 'try using a T/M in London city centre'.....'try cleaning an office on the 10th floor'.... 'truckmount are too noisey for night work'

there will always be limiting factor with any system, but on the whole a T/m wins.

I do a lot of work in care homes. I find that most of these are large houses on their own so when I clean late at night (usual for this type of business), the noise in the care home from my truckmount is less than with a portable. The big selling point for me with a truckmount is the increase in physical cleaning (ie re-filling water in the solution tank, re-mixing chemical for the prespray etc). We do a lot of work in city centres, have I ever been able to not park? No is the answer, If it was the case that a client had no parking around the area, what would you do with a portable? Get a bus or taxi? No you would arrange a time when you could park and hey presto I can use my truckmount again!

As John K says, when i got a new tm after 3 yrs of trading, i used to carry the porty in the van, but never needed to use it very much. When i used the tm on my very first job i did think; what have i let myself in for, but now, when i am forced to use a portable, the performance from my twin vac extracta compared to the tm is a lot less.

If you look at the posts on here from Craig P and the Red carpet, they have either now got a tm or are getting one; Why?

Because they want to play on a level playing field. There are a lot more cleaners on here who earn more money than me and use portable equipment, but i always tell the customer that i charge no more than portable machine users, but have better equipment. Just an opinion.

Give it a few more years and i think tm ownership will rocket, especially with the secondhand units on the market.
