Hi,

A local hotel would like to hire my husband and me for a few days. We have suggested we just come and measure up, but no, they have had bad experiences in the past and would prefer to hire us. They want us for 5 days at 7 hours a day. Of course if we go at the carpet cleaning at the speed we usually do, we'll be totally knackered, so we've got to slow down a bit. But any advice guys? What should I tell the customer?

providing you get the hourly rate you are happy with i cant see the problem as you say you don't have to kill yourself and in a way the pressure is off you as you know how long you have to do the job in hand

Hi Patti,

Seems like a ruse to me to get you on the cheap.

Bear in mind all your equipment costs.

It might be worth quoting a labour rate and an equipment rate.

See what they want doing first, you'll always lose out based on an hourly rate as you could do the cleaning at a fixed price and then go and clean a few more carpets elsewhere in the same time.

It depends on how much you want the job.

Some years ago I was asked by one of the major UK Hotels if I would consider charging a day rate....I thought about it and declined

I did talk to a colleague who I knew did a lot of Hotel work and he informed me that many of them were going down this route even then

My main consideration was 'who' decided what a days work consisted of.

I think the hotel manager has in his head £250 a day. But that's two of us and the TM.

Doesn't sound much for 7 back-breaking hours, does it? We could take our time but you can't really do that with the TM because you've got to keep going.

Maybe I should just pluck a big figure out of the air and go for it, what do you think?

I don't think there'd be any harm in plucking a figure out of the air.

How much would you normally make in an hour, on average? Multiply that by 7 hours, add a bit more on for good measure and you have your day rate.

hi patti, ive been doing hotel work for a couple of years now and have always charged £250 + VAT per day, this is provided they have 3 day a mounth as it is garrenteed work. Ive stopped doing it now as i can earn more else where . ive always used a portable as its easyer to move around the hotel. As for working you butts of ive always found that i get a list of what needs to be done and cross things of as i go, with no one looking over your sholder you work at your own pace, if your tierd take a break Giveing them the list back at the end of the day. this price was me working on my own and would advise you try for around £350 + VAT as two people will do more work than one.

i think for 2 people per day you should be looking at £ 700 +

I agree with doug....they are just trying to get you on the cheap, then again if you don't have other work to do instead of it, you could be very thorough when your working like that.........it could even take months to finish the whole hotel! but I bet there would be no obstacles in your way when you arrive, so they can get thier monies worth!
