Flame Retardents
« on: April 19, 2004, 10:22:05 pm »
Have any of you seen the TV News Bulletins today? At the BAFTA Awards last night, in the rain, the red carpet was awash with foam. I presumed that it was from a high foam cleaning system which had been used, the reporter said it was due to the flame retardent.

Now this is definately not my area of expertise, and the information I have goes back many years, but my understanding was that carpets didn't require flame retardents as the heat would rise away from the carpet. Certainly my experience of a sisal carpet in licensed premises would bear that out, a cigarette end had 'lit' the carpet which then smouldered overnight leaving a charred hole the size of a dinner plate, but it didn't catch fire.

The questions I'm raising now are:
Was this really flame retardent causing the foam, or would it be a fobbed off excuse to save embarrasment? or
Are there now guidelines or regulations for carpets in higher risk or public places?

Can anyone shed any further light on this topic?

Safe and happy cleaning:)
Ken

Hi ken

I didn't see it but it must have been a synthetic carpet as wool carpets even 80/20 are inherently flame retardent due to moisture content.

Must say I can't stand these lovey , slap me on the back, plastic celeb's type tv award shows, they make me so angry >:(

I feel much better now for that rant ;D
