Battery charger question 4 Jeff1
« on: September 04, 2006, 07:17:18 pm »
I have had 2 battery chargers die on me in the space of 6 weeks, both from a supplier on Ebay, so I have decided to get a refund & put the money towards an intelligent charger.

In your opinion is there a specific one I should be looking at, bearing in mind I don't want to spend an absolute fortune. There seem to be a lot of chargers out there that claim to be intelligent, but not sure about them, like this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Draper-12V-Intelligent-Battery-Charger_W0QQitemZ300024256787QQihZ020QQcategoryZ30928QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

My battery is 110amh.

Thanks

Hi Paul
I personally would not buy electrical items from ebay, but saying that I expect hundreds of people have bought good stuff from reputable suppliers.

You can check out you local stores ie. halfords, motor mart type stores, but better still a caravan supplier.

An intelligent charger does a few things, first it will charge your battery up to a set voltage, then it will switch to what is called a pulse charge to take the battery to its full charge,
once it has reached its full charge, the charger will then switch its self off, if it is left connected to the battery say over the week-end, it will then switch its self back on to keep the battery charged to its full capacity, and will keep doing this until the battery is needed.
so in affect you can leave the battery conected to your charger without any danger of over charging it.

The one you pointed out on ebay looks like an ordinary charger and discriptions on ebay can be a bit vague at times.

if you follow the above and when buying one, read the specifications on the box or item its self. if it does not give you the above spec then its not an intelligent charger.

make a new post and ask the guy's on here, who have bought an intelligent charger were the best place and price is, and make your choice from that as there are so many to choose from.
I hope this helps you a little??

Regards

Thanks Jeff, I don't think I will be buying off Ebay again, but then again to be fair the company I bought from were a caravan supplier somewhere in the North East who just happen to trade on Ebay.

Think it's very strange they both broke after only a couple of charges though. They just stopped putting any charge into the battery( the crocodile clips normally spark a little if you mess with them, but nothing & the 15amp fuse in the back was still in tact). I know the battery is OK as I still have my dad-in-laws old charger which charges it fine.

I wonder whether he had bought a job lot of dodgy ones & tried to recondition them, what do you reckon?

LOL It sounds like a box full that was used for a football game in the warehouse on a friday afternoon.

Is the fuse a glass one were you can see right through it?
sometimes a fuse looks intact untill you put a continuity test on it with a meter.

But if your getting a full refund then go for it. and don't forget to put up a new post.

No the fuses are the colour coded ones used in cars, they have clearly not blown, replaced anyway, still no different

Go for the new one then Paul,

it sounds like an internal problem did you check the main fuse in the plug, daft question I know, but often gets overlooked because people think it can't blow if the charger fuse is ok.
