on a water meter? can you claim from the taxman?
« on: September 04, 2006, 05:12:41 pm »
Hi, I've just recently had to move where I made my pure water, into my flat. I'm on a meter.
Was thinking yesterday about the added cost of my water usage and saw this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Water-Meter-All-Sizes-from-1-2-to-2-LOOK-NEW-Bargain_W0QQitemZ250024816778QQihZ015QQcategoryZ57230QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

If I was to install something like this to the feed to my ro do you think I could claim for the additional water used at end of the tax year? anyone else do this?
thanks
Simon

What do these meters do ???
If you are already on a meter why buy one of those.
Iv probably just missed the point but I still am confused.

My guess is, Simon wants to measure the amount of water he is actually drawing off for business purposes, if that is the case it's a good idea.  Of course you can record water charges as a legitimate cost, is the short answer.

Yes Pj thats just what I meant, figure if I fitted something like that I can accurately record the amount of water each year used for business, I cant be the only person on here on a meter who's thought of this, can I ? ;D

but then you would need to tell the water board about your "comercail use" and then pay comercail biz rates

dont do it

You can claim for anything that you need to operate your business that has cost you, for example you can claim rent, electricity, gas and because the main component that you need to operate your business is water and you have to pay for it then you can claim this back.

No way do you need to register as a commercial user, unless you are going through many thousands of litres a day.
As William says, you use other services ie elecricity and can claim % usage if you like, but don't need to register as a commercial user.

I would'nt be purchasing a meter from the water board and would only be declaring it to the taxman, the water company need never know, or are you suggesting in order to claim it the tax office would contact the water company?

The water companies are ok with wfp and there is no need to register as a business from a private adress

Thanks pj, you just answered that for me whilst I was typing.
It seems like a good idea for anyone in my position worried about a rise in their water bills. I've just found another meter at a good price: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150029555401&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=005

phone your water comapny up and ask them about running a biz from your home that involves just using WATER (and a fair bit of it aswell in some cases)

you will find they wont say "oh thats ok, its not a issue"

this is something i researched heavily at the time of the drought orders for the APWC and every company i phoned i got the same answer.

One of the reasons being it is no more expensive being on a commercial rate.

You can not have a commercial supply to a domestic property, they will not switch you no matter what you use the water for.

well that cleared that one up then ;D
thanks again for the help
I may go and ask in the tax office this week as to how I'd go about it e.g. with your diesel you'd read mileage and provide receipts, with water I wont have a seperate commercial bill, only my record keeping from my diy installed meter and my household water bill for the year.
thanks

Dave@stives is spot on. Same here contacted water board they cannot supply commercial to a domestic property. this i too asked when all the trouble of drought orders, my reason being if they shut domestic supplies off, if i was on commercial it wouldnt affect me. ( I thought id sell s**tloads of water to neighbours!!!) LOL
