lone workers
« on: August 29, 2006, 03:36:19 pm »
This may have been discussed before but you can never have enough of the same important information can you!!  ;D

I would like to know how other businesses deal with lone workers. I have read and researched the H & S regulations which relates to first aid - they have mentioned mobile phones or communicators - if someone doesn't have a mobile phone (which some people don't) how would be the best way of dealing with this - invest in a mobile for them? Communicator (?)?

Thanks in advance.

Hi
Lone working is a problem & clients are more & more asking for 2 cleaners for 3 hours work (try getting staff to do 1.5 hours a day!). What I am looking at is using some time/attendance software where you get the cleaner to phone in, put in a code which logs the cleaner in & then they repeat the procedure when they leave. It also lets you know when someone does not show up so you can catch the ball.

Tim

Hi Timmy, thanks for your response - what software are you talking about? I've read something similar on this board before but it wasn't clear as to who has control over it and how it actually all works - sounds complicated, I don't like complications but I would certainly like more info when you get it, if possible? :)

hi,
regarding the phone log in software to enable companies to see when a cleaner logs in and out doesnt really work.
this is because if its a log in using phones they can just use their mobiles and so dnt even have to turn up for work and you wouldnt no, unless for a complaint. Only way to do it is maybe have a phone at the site which only enalbes them to log in using that phone?

Hi Mathew
Not quite true there.the system uses the caller id from the site & will not allow the cleaner to call from their mobile or home. Also it sends the supervisor a message on no shows so that is good for me. I have had a quote for 995 for up to 25 caller ids so i am going to go for it. Good selling tool as well!

 Hi all,

Here's a new one how about TRUST!!!!!!

As long as everyone is carying thee mobile phone which is switched on then that's ok, if they leave a job early and it's done to the required standard then good luck to lthem. If you start getting complaints then deal with it!!
If you have no trust with your staff, then they aren't the right ones!!!

I choose the name because it was different - personally I find some logos/names for cleaning companies too industrial and which often give an appearance of being unfriendly, I wanted to move away from that - so, I wanted something that people can identify which is also seen as (most of the time) friendly and approachable.  ;D

The name actually comes from my own dog - he's a very special dog and well travelled - lived in Romania - escaped to victory to Holland - where he lived with me for a few years and then moved/returned to the UK last year...........he is a Canadian Breed!!!

I state he escaped to victory because he was a street dog from puppyhood. His history is a little bit of a mystery. He was fortunate that he was hit by a car one day and sent to a shelter suffering a broken leg. I say fortunate since many street dogs (in Romania) are tortured and killed - very seriously abused. His survival was purely down to his on independance, which he still has today. He ain't a fellow you can order around - he prefers to compromise - his way! He still has that hunting instinct and, sadly, because of this he can not be let of the lead - I've tried a number of times and he's been through training but something will 'click' inside his head and you see a change and he'll not respond to his name, he's on another planet while sniffing out for things to eat. Once back on the lead the change is highly noticable he suddenly is responsive. Even at home in the garden - like a proper well bought up dog!

And I love him to bits!  ;D

We, as employers, have a duty of care to our staff. The original post was about Health and Safety issues relating to lone workers.

If we have workers on their own we must provide adequate safety and assess any situations they could find themselves in; such as sickness/accidents and attacks (upon them) while at work.

We should provide/have a way of keeping track of lone workers whether that be due to health and safety or if they are actually turning up for work - this could be important if anything were to happen such as the building in which they work was to burn down.

Just a few thoughts  :)

I never considered the lone working to be about 'checking up' on my staff thats why I have spot checks and customer satisfaction surveys...to me a lone working policy is to ensure my staff's safety.
