Cleaning copper

hiya all.

              can any one give me any advise on cleaning copper?

specific job is extractor hood hammered effect copper.
it seems that it has been varnished , but one sid off hood has had varnish cleaned off. but all very dirty.

You could try 'Barkeepers Friend' Although this wont remove the varnish it cleans copper beautifully.

Try a paste type paint stripper to remove varnish but try a small inconspicuous area first - before doing the whole thing
