delicate lead windows
« on: August 23, 2006, 11:51:14 pm »
you know the type of windows where as you clean them with cloth some of the lead pulls off. is there anything people do to try and fix this, i was thinking of taking some superglue out with me to stick the lead back on but don't know if this is a bad idea or not

Just do them very delicately, and tell them the lead is loose, so you can't guarantee that particular window is perfect.

Don't worry about smears.
Trust me, 99% of people say "That's ok, I know it's awkward. They'll still be a lot better".

You'd use an awful lot of super glue, plus you would have to clean off any existing adhesive off the back of the little strips of lead, and I'm not sure how effective super glue is on this anyway.
Sometimes you do come across leaded glass where the lead hasn't been stuck on very well, as Roger said, inform the customer about the state of the lead and tread very carefully when cleaning the windows.
Trad or WFP it is a pane for both methods if you have loose lead strips.

one of my customers recently accused me of loosening two of her strips which in whole truth had been hanging of before i got job two years ago. she was an old lady and for good customer relations i bought a reel of the lead that has a peelable paper backing which you remove and then stick to the window be carefull the stuff comes in differant widths so make sure you get the correct one.it cost me £9 and about 5 mins to fit. she was verry happy and told neigbours what agood job i had done.
i still felt a bit of a mug and so if i see any loose lead now i always tell customer before i clean but also tell them i can fix it if they want.
better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove any doubt
