Just Starting Out
« on: August 20, 2006, 08:13:05 pm »
  Hi all,

I have been window cleaning for 2 years now and make a nice little living out of it, but I now want to start into the contract and office cleaning world - I get bored easily and am sucker for punishment!!

My wife is here at home all day to look after all the paperwork and money side of things, she is very thorough, my main concerns are finding the work and pricing it correctly.

I intend to employ to do the work and grow the company nice and slowly (was offered a very large school yesterday!! - turned it down for now).

Any help and advise (sample letters etc) would be more than appreciated.

   Many thanks in advance

    Marc

Just my opinion - I think you made the mistake of turning down the school. I would assume that the school already had cleaners/staff but simply wanted to change the company or hand-over the cleaning to a contract cleaning company.....so finding staff may not have been a problem....nor various other resources one would need for a job this size.

Some schools can pay very highly and whatever you may have had to spend initially you would've soon financially gained.

This was an opportunity that, if you're serious about contract cleaning, you shouldn't have missed. It was certainly a stepping stone in the right direction.

Just a thought. ;D

If you're sucker for punishment try and get the shcool contract back. When you're fully up and running and have regular work perhaps then become more picky if you so wish.

  Heydog!

I see that from an ealier post you are also starting out in the contract cleaning world, I understand what you are saying about turning down such an opportunity, but having spent a couple of years building up a window cleaning round you soon learn to smell  rat.
The person whois offering me this is another cleaning company who I know, there must be a reason he doesn't want it himself, asides from that it is a very large school for which I would neeed to cover approx 20grands worth of wages for the first 2 months of cleaning - a bit too much fr me at the moment.

I know you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but sometimes they can bite!!

The contract is for 300hrs a week, with start up costs and wages for 2 months plus the inevitable late payment I reckon on needing 20 grand to be safe.

That sounds like a mighty fine contract to me, go and have a word with your bank manager, if youve had a good business account for two years he/she should be sympathetic towards an overdraft, just sound him/her out, 300 hrs pw is a very good earner, you'd be daft to let it go Marc, where abouts are you? if you dont want it, i'm sure someone on here would be delighted if you put a word the right way ;D

I see your point - a very big school indeed. I can also understand your point on the other company wanting to pass it on.

I am just starting out - my research is going really well and building up various knowledge from here and the internet.

I am currently waiting for my logo design to be completed - it is a gift I decided to give myself for doing research and learning a fair bit. Besides, once I have a logo that I can use (it has to last a fair number of years) I can then attach it to letters which can be sent to potential customers.

I have amazed myself at how much I've enjoyed the researching, not like me at all.  ;D

Marc,

Can you give a few more details ?

A cleaning company is going to give you a 300hr a week contract? How much do they get?

How did you get to the 20k figure?

Sorry for being negative but all this doesn't make sense.
