Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a sat nav system? I was having a look at some in halfords today and they've come down a lot in price since they first came on the scene. There are so many different ones though it blew my mind!

Think its time i ditched the maps and treated myself.

Has anyone had one for a while and are happy with it.

If so please can you recommend.

Try the Tom tom ! used to use it when i was in sales great piece of kit worth the extra money i would say as it can work of either the postcode or address.

Was looking at the tom toms today, they are impressive even if they are a little more expensive as you say.

One with postcode as well as address would be great.

I have the Garmin Street Pilot I3, A lot cheaper than the Tom Tom but does the same job for half the price. Does Postcode and Street also can add place of interest to it.

I have a Navman, only £129 and does the job although data entry is not a simple as the Tom Tom. Good enough though and gets me there.

But dont buy from Halfords, try here www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk

Or look on ebay, there are many shop sales on there, Halfords will be the highest price anywhere.

garmin invented sat nav apparently and their nuvi fits neatly in your pocket when you leave the van, it's got all the flashy bits but i find after a short while you never use them, i don't even have the voice on now, she irritates me!! one thing i would like is one that can 'learn' your preferred routes out of a town, mine will insist on trying to send me through 10 sets of traffic lights instead of the by-pass,

Garmin street pilot i3 can be had with maps and speed cameras loaded brand new for ca £130 +£7p+p on ebay You may get one cheaper if you want to go a biddin!
Cracking machine that does exactly what it says on the tin, for not a lot of outlay.

i was in halfords the other day though and there was a quee of people arguing with the staff and trying to return some of the new models with the larger face, so theres obviously a glitch of some kind with them.

I use a Tomtom,on the whole very good but not always accurate.
On one route it insists on sending me down a street that has been closed for about 15 years.
The other day I entered a postcode to a  house and it directed me to a Royal mail depot 3 miles away
It is always telling me to turn right/left when it is only a bend in the road,and maps are always out of date,but i think this is a general problem with all satnavs.
A bit of advice,try not to use the windscreen suckers as thieves are looking for the tell tale ring marks and smashing windows to steal your satnav.  John

Sorry to hear that Phil,thieving scumbags!!
My m8 had his van window smashed and his satnav stolen whilst parked on his drive.
2 weeks later a friend was driving past my m8s house and noticed that someone was peering through the hedge at his van,so phoned my m8 and he chased him off,after a few phone calls my m8 and 5 friends were chasing him and gradually steering him towards a small ind estate,once on the estate it was just a matter of leading the lamb to slaughter.
Turned out it was the same bloke that did it 2 weeks previous,he got the biggest hiding of his life.
Now that's justice.

I've got tom tom on a pda and as stated above about being mounted on the windscreen , i have mine on a mobile phone holder which fits on the air vents.
The pda is in a holder which clips to my belt, so no hassle about getting it stolen
