my water problem
« on: August 06, 2006, 02:40:57 pm »
hi there, to cut a long story short, I've been racking my brain to solving my ro water production problem, presently i produce to a holding tank at a mates as a favour (I live in a small first floor flat see).
Problems been him not refilling the tank when i need it done, merlin filter in his house, he works long hours, i have no access to it etc.
Cant get too cheesed off with him hes doing me the favour after all! and I'm getting to the stage where I need to take full control and be independent of his generosity.
I think I've found a solution:
merlin in my van with 250ltr tank, hose connected to my supply out of my kitchen fed down wall, along a garden wall to a cemetery access road behind property( big parking problem at front of my house)
I park up and connect by means of a hozelock for a few hours to fill.
So subject to permission and i dont think my neighbours will object have good relations, do you think this will work?
Alternatively I could have the ro in my flat and just feed the filtered water to the van(no space for even a small holding tank) but I may have chances to top up at customers houses if the merlin was van fitted.
So I'm just asking if this is a viable solution and to anyone whos knows more than me are there any problems with this idea i may encounter? I've not measured the distance the hose would run but I'm guessing it will be about 40 meters max.
thanks
Simon :)

only problems you might come across is

1/   all the little darlings in the area with their pen knives

2/ water pressure

if the neighbours get iffy do the windows as a favour

yes
had thought of that the little darlings are anything but around my way ;D
the hose would be hidden just below the garden side of wall with a hozelock connecter so obscured from passers by when not being used.
as for pressure, yes that would be my main concern i guess, that and the rejected water and neighbours thinking it a waste. May fit the merlin in my kitchen and just have the ro feed running out to the van pressure then should'nt be any problem.

what would concerne me simon is

1, the time factor to refill
2, the distance of your hose to the van/car

how about this for a temporary solution until you can find a permenant solution.

put a di tank in your van/car and fill with tap water which you can then fill up from anyones house (get permission 1st)

although you will use more resin it may help until you can get sorted

HI Simon.

Have you looked in the local papers to see if any small lock ups with a tap are up for rent.

I live just outside Hailsham so if you ever get stuck you can fill up from my holding tank.

Hi cant you use a hozelock automatic timer, set the time for how many hours you want it to run every day.

In winter your hose might freeze.
It's a game of three halves!

Thanks for the offer Macc, its appreciated ;)
i do have another wc mate who does help me that way on occasions, I'm just getting to the stage now after a year where I want full control over my business with being reliant on others for favours, it would give me so much more piece of mind when planning my workload and taking on new customers.
Rent here in Brighton for even small lock ups without water is just crazy prices.

yes Roy, thats just what I would do

Thanks all for the replies,
been thinking more about it this evening and I could create space in my loft converted room in roof space for maybe 2 x  175 ltr tanks linked together one slightly higher than the other( no bigger, I would'nt get them up there), ro feeding them and the hose fed out the back over a wall as explained before and I could have a shut off valve from the tanks so water does'nt sit in the hose and freeze.
Do you think I could fill the van this way with gravity alone? ok it won't fill super fast like with a transfer pump and hose but will still cut down the fill time considerably.
Thanks
Simon

Hi Simon. I do have a pump in my static  with a 50mm transfer pipe, even under gravity it flies out.

My only concern with it being in the loft is the weight & any leaks. Apart from that good idea.

Have you got an ro already because Gardiners are making a zero waste for the ro man any time now, that would sort out some other probs for you.

Yes Macc already use a merlin, a pump and 50mm transfer hose also, the capillary action of the pump means I dont switch it on as its constantly submerged, if I was to go with the attic route though I dont think I could run a transfer hose of that size over the wall I'd have to use ordinary hose. Fortunately the attic room has new floor joists about 2"x10" so I think they will be strong enough. I'm going to have a look in B&Q to see what water tanks they have, figure if I can produce 300 ltrs a day then I will be ok with my 250 ltr van tank.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks everyone
Simon

couldnt you mount the merlin in your van and keep topping up at your customers houses. Also it would be easier to insulate your van rather than your loft

Thanks guys,
Think I've got problem sorted now,
by chance I've a redundant space where an old hot water tank once stood in an airing cupboard (got a combi boiler now) I've scrounged a 240 ltr wheelie bin and it fits in perfect.
tapped into mains water 80 psi and tds 380 ppm. Submersible pump will go in it, plumbed in through floor to front door downstairs where I will connect it to a 50 mtr reel of 1/4 " hose and transfer it to my vans 250 ltr tank.
Hoping this will work.
Is there likely to be any problem pumping water through such a small bore transfer hose  with hozelock fittings or will it just take a bit longer?
My only problem now is deciding on the ro
The merlin may have to stay where it is as I was sharing it. Not sure whether it would be suitable on a water meter (high rejection) but I must balance that against fill times, with such a small holding capacity I may need to fill up once in morning and once early afternoon if I'm busy so I will need to make 200 ltrs within 4 hours. Any suggestions please?
Thanks again
Simon

Hi Simon.

Gaz Hh 20 recommended numatic triggers on my poles, they are fantastic & save loads of water, i never use 250ltrs now on a long day.

They cut my water by 40% at least.

Got mine off Ebay & there on all my poles.

A must. Worth every penny.

You need to either batter him, or find a new mate  ;D ;D
