Talking of a lead/acid leisure battery that is connected to the van alternator charging system.

Is it best - to get the longest life from it - to keep the battery from discharging below a certain point? As in should I trickle charge my leisure battery frequently and if so how often?

Each night? Twice a week? Weekly?
It's a game of three halves!

I use a battery to battery charger drawing 20 amps whilst  driving. Could draw 30 amps but would flatten the vehicle battery on short trips so stick to 20 amps so leisure battery is always working fully charged on 14.2 Volts whilst van battery remains at 14.4 v.

Bench charge every night. Leave it in situ if possible for easy convenience.

Depleting it below a certain percentage uses a cycle & shortens its life.

Possibly use a battery to battery charger also to help top it up between jobs. We do on both vans.

The recommendation is to fully recharge
the leisure battery after every use and to not let the battery drop to below 50% depth of discharge

It's even more important to bench charge every night during the colder months esp if you run an electric reel/diesel heater as cold temperatures will deplete a leisure battery quicker. I also have a b+b charger that charges up my 2 batteries when my engine is running.
price higher/work harder!
