Getting more customers
« on: May 24, 2025, 09:18:38 am »
Just by pure accident, I couldn't clean my rich run on Thursday because I woke up ill and had 3 tyres to get fitted in the afternoon so I decided to move it on to Friday. I forgot Friday was a holiday and the streets were dead and most folk were in so chatted away to them as I started early. At the end of the day I wondered what had happened as I picked up 5 cracking cleans. Found out the old windy has gave up due to ill health and isn't coming back. His customers had waited months to know what was happening and then he told them he is retiring. I only clean one in the rich estate and now I have 3 and it looks like I will probably pick up more.

It was a blessing in disguise being ill and working yesterday because most customers were in and their neighbours noticed me. So if you want more customers, work a few public holidays and you will be surprised how more neighbours of customers see you out cleaning. 😉

Actually there was a nugget of truth in Scottish's post. If you work when people are at home you often get walk up enquiries.

If you want more work then actively advertising or knocking on some doors would be a much better use of your time than working a bank holiday hoping to get noticed.

Through in a very hot sunny day and most folk are out in their garden with nothing to do. I arrive and begin cleaning their neighbours windows and the seed is planted in their mind. The moment I'm finished they are over to see what I will charge to clean their windows and what's the time frame. That's what I have found out so if you want more customers work sunny public holidays. fwiw

When I needed work and had my act together I might take on a new job and knock a couple of doors either side and hand over my card.

Being organised and overcoming the fear of rejection are the keys.

'Needs must' comes to mind. If we don't need the work, then we don't need to look for it.

I did find that working the occassional Saturday attracted a number of enquiries in the early days and its something I always recommend to newbies.

This is how you build your round up. I've been window cleaning in my chosen area for 32 years now. The more jobs you get the more walk ups/enquiries/recommendations you get too even if you don't work bank holidays or weekends( I don't usually)...

Your whole round becomes self sustaining and you ll have less time(or inclination/energy) to devote to your other non window cleaning jobs (unless you have no life/hobbies outside of window cleaning)

The money becomes very regular and reliable and your jobs and prices/compactness increases resulting in a very good round with minimal stress.
price higher/work harder!

One has to do the work so don't need to use your own time. The next best thing is the walk ups are next to where one is working. I got a £30, £20, £18, £16 and a £7 cleans per month on Friday so I'm a happy camper. The more you are out working the more people see you cleaning and maybe take a photo of your van or ask for a card. It worked for me and I'm not looking for anymore customers and dumping the difficult cleans.

A gardener told me this years ago and I thought he was harsh but he told me its business and one has got to have the balls to do it. Last week I lost a fiver clean at a care home I do, I had been cleaning her windows since I started up. I think someone else has started cleaning with a ladder and a few are using him. If anymore leave then I will say I'm retiring and he can do the rest and then I can concentrate on the cream cleans.

Never a truer word has been said on the forum and that's because Des has 32 years of Wisdom in window cleaning. Through in a nice clean uniform, van and most of all being reliable and its nearly impossible to fail in this game. In my 6 years of cleaning that's what I have noticed but one ends up with too many customers. I must have over 120 plus 3 care homes that make 2 ton a month now.

I'm actually raring to go again after my holiday. I've only worked one day(last Thursday) in 18 days.

It's time to get into a solid work routine again for 3 months until my next holiday...

I've got my waterproofs ready as its forecast a wet week ahead. To be fair we need the rain badly in these parts esp the farmers so it's a welcome relief from the hot,dry weather!

I think this job would be perfect if 2 people cleaned the same round. One did a Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other one did Tuesday and Thursday. Swap around next week and it means a day off in-between but you would need to share the van.

Or you do the monday tuesday and they did the rest of the week.

I would always have 2 vans if employing even one isnt used that much.  imagine the panic if the van breaks down.
