Upholstery chemicals, Recommendations?
« on: January 01, 2021, 09:19:12 pm »
After moving away from one supplier, I’m looking to replace my upholstery chemicals. I know they are so many types of upholstery. So this could be difficult to discuss. I was looking at Revive from TMF, but after searching multiple forums. Not really any feedback on how well it works? So let me ask, what do you carry for the majority of your upholstery jobs?

Thank you, Chris

looked up TMF revive  ,  it would be similar enough to products like prochem fabric restorer, chemspec Heavy duty soil lifter ... and a few others ,  basically, they contain more solvent products than a regular prespray  ,   TMF Revive ... a surfactant, butyl glycol and citrus solvent .
TMF , Price wise ,  there is better value out there . imo .

So the majority of upholstery solutions contain more solvent? One of my contacts in the industry said avoid solvents, might destroy the backing? Would this information be correct.

You say price wise, better value out there? What would you suggest?

Thank you.

im not sure what he meant by backing upholstery wise  ..     products like these might only be really needed in restoration cases  , upholstery cleaning is a mixed bag , some jobs your just going through the motions cause its not really that dirty ... and sometimes all or parts of the sofa might need something strong on the headrests or arm rests or sometimes all over . The use of solvents , the way i see it anyway is a quick and relatively safe way of breaking down the ingrained and heavy soiled ones ,  safe in that the PH might not need to be very high , agitation can be minimal , and dwell short  .
Personally i mostly use alltec citrus prespray .  Great performance/price .

Christoph, your contact is probably referring to a flocked material such as fake suede etc. This type of fabric is held together with adhesive and the use of a solvent can break that adhesive down and cause the fabric to fall apart. That’s more likely to happen when using a solvent spotter or dry clean fluid but caution needs to be exercised when using pre sprays with a higher solvent content just in case.
I have tried to reduced the number of bottles on the van and I’ve largely abandoned specialised upholstery chemicals, I like Restormate Citrus Premium for most carpet and upholstery jobs, it’s pH 9 so not too high for most jobs.

Thank you for the replies, any body tested the Chemspec or Prochem upholstery presprays? If so what results do you achieve?

Hi Chris

its great that you asked this question show that you care. training is an ongoing process, and we need to keep up with new products and cleaning methods. The thing that changed the way i look at products and methods was Prochem's cleaning courses. what is great about them is that they are designed really well when it comes to dirt level, method used, and which product to use.

so basically its three groups

1. Preventive

Method 1 : Water Based Solution, Spray/Towel Absorb

Method 2 : Dry Clean Solvent/Spirit Based Spray/Towel Absorb

2. Corrective

Method 3 : Water Based Soil Crystallisation, Hand Shampoo Treatment With Low Moisture Foam. (for wet clean only sofa cleaning)

Method 4 : Soil Extraction, Pre Spray And Extraction Treatment

Method 5 : Dry Clean, Solvent Based Spray Extraction Treatment

Method 6 : Dry Clean By Hand

3. Salvage
Method 7 : Pre Spray And Wet Extraction

Method 8: Wet Cleaning Treatment For Flooded Fabric

Method 9 : Smoke Odour And Or Soot Wet or Dry Cleanable

Method 10 : Light Soot On Wet Cleanable Fabric

Hope that explains it well for you

Good Luck

Respects
