Today I got bitten by a dog for the 2nd time in the last 12 months, it was the same dog both times!! Last time I just let it go but this time I am seriously thinking of making a claim against the owner, who is now an ex customer! As I have lost over half of day at work as had to go to hospital to be bandaged up etc.  Has anyone got any experience of doing this? Should I phone a no win no fee Solicitor? Any help would be great thanks

I believe it's illegal for a Dog to bite someone.
Take a look at the Dangerous Dogs Act, and consider reporting it to the Police.

Last time I was bitten by a dog it cost me the entire afternoon off work. I was working right next door to our doctors surgery at the time. Unfortunately for me it was closed. I went to the local chemist for advise. They directed me to the hospital as my  Tetanus jab was overdue. The doctor at the hospital sorted out my tetanus jab and also prescribed me antibiotics which neither the in house dispensary nor my local chemist had in stock so I had to go find one that did. By the time I'd done all that the day was over. The crazy thing was, the bloke whose dog bit me was a postie. I would have thought that he of all people would have been more aware of this type of thing and kept his dog under better control.

Thankfully nowadays it seem to be less of a problem for me but when I started back in the 70s I seemed to get bitten a couple of times a year for the first few years. I remember getting bitten by four dogs all in one day on one occasion, all Jack Russels.

You need to report it to the police and get a log number , if it has happened before and there is a record of it the dog could be put down .

It happened to me . You need to report it to the police,  certain dog breeds will be destroyed and owner taken to court  other breeds owner will get a warning  and taken to court. I was awarded £ 250 the owner was given 12 months probation . I was willing to attend court but they pleaded guilty. A friend of mine reported his attack to the police but also contacted a claim company and won £4500. The police take this very seriously and were a great help.

I was bitten by another Window Cleaners dog.  I believe the owner got the idea after watching Columbo on TV. The whole Rosebud thing distracted me and next thing, jaws, teeth and blood {mine}.
Went to A&E and they cleaned it out, no stitches for dog bites as it can encourage infection. Had another visit three days later to change the dressing and clean it out again. Pretty painful all in all.

Thanks for the replys guys, I originally didn't want to make a fuss! But it actually caused me a lot of pain and cost me an afternoon of work. If I had of been a child it could have bitten them on the face. I'm going to call 101 and see what happens. Thanks again!!

did you not have your pole in your hand?i would squirt it with water if it looked liked it was going to bite.....either that or i put my foot up in the air....this has only happened twice in 27 years when confronted with a defensive dog in a garden....

i ve been bitten twice on my fingers(drawing blood!) putting slips through doors!this was many years ago i didnt go to the hospital though...

The dogs to be wary of is a Jack Russell and a Yorkshire Terrier.

Son has 2 Jack Russells, a male and a female. The male is quite placid but the female will fight her ground, no matter what.

We have a couple of Yorkies on the round. If they could get to us they would bite.

If a dog is out when I call I ring the bell and ask them to get it in. No matter what size. I tell them the insurance won’t let us clean if a dog is out.
No reply to doorbell I skip it.
Dogs probably had a poo in the garden anyway.

I would get nipped every time, and to try to stop it I would put foam down the back of my trousers. That didn't work so the last thing I did to keep them away was to wave a pole in front of them. They barked like mad but couldn't get close enough to attack me again.

I never told the couple (they are a lovely couple, around my age and both working full time, and I get on very well with them). When they are there they put the dogs in the shed without my asking, so I have just put up with it.

You could take a couple of those Pedigree Dentastix along with you. Once they get used to treat you will become their best friend.

Postmen do this all the time,they soon learn where the dodgy ones are and make em friends, I don't see it working quite as well with a two monthly window cleaner

What does work though is spraying them with water as they approach,especially if you have fan jets,spray right at them it confuses them and the fact you have a pretty big stick discourages them from going all out attack, also never turn your back on a dog showing biting instincts if you need to retreat walk backwards facing them up and keep looking brave, remember you are bigger and stronger than them and a dogs basic instinct is self preservation, so picking a fight at a size disadvantage is of little long term use.

Nah not a good idea.  Im sure post man think its ok but there is a downside from what they do.  Every time the letter box opens, the dog expects a treat and therefore bites at the letter box.  So when us window cleaners post through the box they will bite unintentionally as they expect it to be food.

Depends how long you want to mess around with this problem.  The easy route is to text your customer to keep the dog in and let them know when calling.  If they dont want this, then they can chain their dog up.
Alternatively, collect some small stones or dirt in a little plastic bottle and take that with you.  Every time the dog comes near you, throw it to the floor. This will startle the dog and make him back off. Eventually he will learn to stay away from you.  This or spray with water. Water works a treat!

I hate yappy dogs and a neighbours dog to where i was cleaning would always be barking non stop at the wire fence. So he would get a quick spray from the brush end, haha 6 jets lol and soon learnt to be quiet. After two visits of my customer, the dog now knows not to bark. Its bliss

In 30 years I have never had a problem with dogs., but then I am very much a dog person, I always make friends with dogs. Not because I'm scared of being attacked, just because I love dogs. Some customers say their dog won't let just anyone pet them, but they are fine with me.
One of my commercial jobs has 2 cats, they were both rescue cats, when I first met them they were fine with me but next time I went and had to clean a window where their bed was, one of buggers went for me. Actually drew blood, scratching and biting, does it every time I have to do that window, so now if it won't move when I have to clean it, I have to put the other cat's bed over this cat to stop the little s..t from salvaging me

If you enter a front or back garden through an unlocked gate the police will act, if you climb a fence or gate  that is locked then that is your problem.
There is a spray called Biteback which is available online which is used by the police and said to be effective when an attack happens.
I have shown dogs, been a breeder and competed in obedience and was still attacked . Wrong place wrong time.
I involved the police because the owner laughed when his dog attacked me.
Beware of the dog sign is not an excuse unless you climb over a locked gate.
It is not bad dogs but bad owners
