Public Liability! How much on average does everyone pay?
« on: April 17, 2019, 08:42:07 am »
Just about to renew my cover but not too sure what to include and not to include! I paid £280 last year for £5m but some insurers are suggesting I up my cover to include other things like personal accident which I already have with a packaged bank account!

Hiscox £15.40 /month which includes insuring the property being worked on, that’s the important thing for me.

I wouldn’t worry about going above £5m unless you have a lot of commercial work that will require it.

Only you know whether you require your tools insured or personal accident cover.

£80.....simply business 1million cover(it doesn't cover glass being worked on)

Realistically what chances are of joe public getting injured because your cleaning a window?virtually nil....

I've only got PLI because a few commercial jobs require it.....
price higher/work harder!

But what if they did Daz? Someone trips over your hose and breaks a hip/leg then as a sole trader it would bankrupt you if you were at fault.

I just paid approximately  £130 for 5 million but it also includes legal cover. Play it safe and some people are assured by you having it.
Just went through simply business brokers sometimes get a better deal.

I think I paid £60 a year for basic. I did have the hiscox one that includes stuff being worked on but as I don't really do anything other than cleaning windows now I didn't think I need it. Not much to break cleaning windows.

I agree and the excess usually makes you think twice about claiming for a pot you knocked over.

If you break a window who's paying for it to be replaced?

ive never broke a window in 26 years of window cleaning that ive had to pay for......ive only ever broke 2 in all that time...

ive cracked a little opener with hot water and the customer was fine about it as it already had a crack in it and the other was 400 years old(wafer thin cottage glass)when trad and the old geezer replaced it himself and insisted i didnt have to pay for a new pane..... ;)

if i ever break a pane ill just pay for it out of my own savings.....its highly unlikely though..... 8)

I went 18 years without having an accident, then my insurance company had to cough up £25,000 in payments to cover me over a one year period for damage caused by chemicals that are regularly discussed on here. Dont risk your future pension Daz for the sake of £5 a month.

It doesn’t matter what it costs, at the end of the day it’s a business expense, buy the cover that suits you and your business and give yourself peace of mind.  ;D. Ultimately after reading all the replies above it sounds to me like it is less than a price of a cup of coffee per week for most people  ::)roll

Let me tell you about a "near miss" I had and then tell me whether good insurance is worth having or not. (Obviously taking care is even more important in this example)

About ten years ago the hose caught on a wheely bin and I propped my extended SLX20 against the house to go and unsnag it. As I pulled it free I jerked the pole and it fell on a pram in the garden with the customer's baby in it. Fortunately it bounced off the hood, had the hood been down then the brush would have hit the baby.

The customer was amazingly good about - she actually said she shouldn't have left the pram so close to the house! (She was nearby weeding/doing some gardening) - as I stammered and went white at what could have happened.

Now had I injured that baby any insurance in the world would not have helped my guilt at my stupidity but it would have helped my pocket against a multi thousand pound claim.
It's a game of three halves!

That's crazy....by the way I don't use chemicals anymore unless it's on plastics.....

Don’t you think it would be wise and helpful to others if you said what chemicals caused 25 grands worth of damage,I think I’d be mentioning it.

Sure. Virosol on aluminium frames.

Mineral deposit cleaner on lime rendered building.

Both were 10-11K in claims. Had another claim regarding pressure washing which was just caused by thoughtlessness which came to 2.5K.

Accidents are accidents because we don’t think enough. There’s too much of that being displayed in this thread. Thinking it won’t happen to me. 20 years of no claims led me up that path.

Hiscox were my insurers and fair play to them they covered every penny. Although they don’t want my business anymore. Once they’re prepared to cover me again I will go back to them as they were excellent.
