Commercial building staining on glass
« on: April 28, 2018, 01:04:03 pm »
Hi guys

Any ideas best way to remove this, tried bit of Softwash chemical to no avail.
The only way I could get an improvement was cif on a bronze wool pad.
Any other chemical ? Or stronger Softwash chemical, or maybe a de scaler?

Any ideas be helpful

You can get glass polishing kits, but in reality I doubt the customer would want to pay for all the time it would take to get these clean.

I have heard but not tried hydrochloride acid ( brick cleaner ) can remove this type of staining

Maybe if he’s in a benevolent mood Chris Scott might give you an answer as he’s removed lead staining off glass

Is it lead or pigment from the painted frames?

As far as I'm aware there is a drainage issue, water cascades down this front vestibule from the roof, which has a  grey painted / coated  surface.
No lead as far as I'm aware.

We have a product to remove that staining but it is time consuming to do it.  So you need to do a test area, either half or a small area of one window then quote them to do it all.  You will probably need to cost in access equipment or scaffolding as well.  Ask them first what they are prepared to pay for the removal of it

Thank you Mr M

I've got an improvement yesterday with cif and a bronze pad, I think it's still poor but customer was very happy so I'm adding on the extra time for scrubbing.
Customer is aware the top of this vestibule has no drainage at all, the rain just streams down said windows possibly dragging crap from the grey paint and causing this staining.

Thanks for your imput, I will put this to the customer.
Is your product able to be applied via a pad on a pole?

Yes you can apply it on a pole but it requires rinsing just like CIF furthermore, it leaves a coating on the glass to ward off further staining.  This is not to say it won’t stain again it just slows it down by applying a thin protective coat.  Jobs like this are always best done by hand as opposed with a pole but of course labour time and therefore costs increase as well.

How big is the area you have to do?
Roughly the M2 of the Glass so I can calculate what you need.
What size are your tools that you are putting the pad on as we also have pads both hand held and those that first on poles

Hello Kevin

30 Sq metres should cover it

We will be using Gardiner poles
If this need special pads then so be it or
We can apply with standard applicator then rinse off with our window cleaning brushes.

Brian

How are you going to get the chemical onto the glass?
It needs to be applied, scrubbed, allowed to dwell, scrubbed again and then rinsed.

It is a two part mixture that needs to be mixed prior to application
