Sacked for not going on a roof
« on: June 24, 2017, 05:32:49 pm »
I'm  fully wfd and don't use ladder, customer has an orangery with a tiled pitched roof with glass on the top,I can clean there sides from the ground but can't clean the side facing the house as you can't see it,customer has been happy with what I've done for the last couple of years, but has found someone that will  clean  the side I can't by using ladders,And will get on the roof.
Not a problem losing the job as snowed under.
Customer advises that the new guy has insurance that covers him if he was to fall from the roof.
Does anyone have an idea on how much it costs to cover yourself if you fall from a ladder when cleaning ?
Forgot to say when I took the job on I told customer I couldn't clean the side I can't see and customer said the he wouldn't want me to get on roof as to dangerous and that he works in health and safety.(and I have been doing a good job)
Thanks for reading sorry if post is a bit disjointed

I'm not sure the insurance would look to reclaim any payout to the new cleaner from the customer.
Is the customer liable for your safety?

If you dont do ladders then let it go , let the other bloke fall of the roof , even if you are insured for it the payout  is no good if you are dead .
I'm so lazy I'm getting tired of it !

Residential work is a whole new kettle of fish when it comes to window cleaning safety. The homeowner is not liable for an accident of your making. So for example, if the ladder slipped underneath you as you reached out too far for that corner window - you cannot claim off the homeowner.

However, if you fall from a ladder because of something giving way on the property.... may be you are holding on to an open skylight, the catch fails, traps your finger, makes you fall OR a hand rail of a balcony gives way due to rotted wood then under Civil Law you can sue the homeowner.

If you don't do ladders then you don't do ladders. I turned one down the other week, couldn't reach the back windows over a flat roof extension.  She says I have some ladders you can use if you want to climb up.

No I don't really,I can either miss that window or you can find a cleaner who uses ladders. She looked a bit miffed mind.

Right, ask her if she will pay your mortgage and utility bills and feed your kids whilst you're off work with a broken leg?

Insurance will wriggle out of it if you fell ie not having ladder footed, not having ladder safety checked, not having ladder tethered.. the list goes on
You can't polish a turd

even with wfp there is always the odd window we cant clean on some properties without ladder work.some i use ladders, others i dont bother because their too risky.

ive lost customers too in the past because i wont risk my neck climbing on their dodgy flat roofs(or whatever).losing customers like these have never prevented me from building a much more profitable easier round.
price higher/work harder!
