Hydrolic oil
« on: June 16, 2017, 10:15:57 pm »
Ive been shining for 13yrs now but have been presented with a new problem today, which might prove to be a real pita. Custy rings me and advises me that some of the heavy duty machinery on the nearby building site has been spewing hydrolic oil into the air which the wind has then picked up and left it all over his windows. Hes contacted the builder who has admitted liability and is sending a "specialist cleaner" to sort it out. He then tells me that "most of the estate behind him has also been affected of which i clean the majority  :-[ . Its a very large building site, which is surrounded on all sides by estates which could also have been affected , all of which i have an interest in. I havnt seen it yet, will try and have a look tomorrow, but anyone had experience of cleaning oil off glass/pvc . ?  Any suggestions  welcome.

My first thoughts are.. go see the builders and explain to them the problems they are causing.

Maybe they will try to limit any further problems.

I had some real bad windows tother day with what l think was grease of some kind upon them, tried virosol to no avail. Then used virosol again with scrubber, again no joy !

Finaly got the steel wool out and problem solved. Just use plenty of lubricant.

I had some windows recently covered in Vaseline, absolute nightmare.
I even tried gunk, this help but still a nightmare.

You could try a spray bottle with some gunk as it is degreaser for car engines. But use a old brush.

ask the "specialist cleaner" what he uses.id try neat virosol as its a degreaser.it sounds like a nightmare for you mate esp if its on lots of your customers windows (that are normally easy to clean)but you ll probably find your fears are unfounded and itll only be the odd window here and there thats got this oil on.
price higher/work harder!

Well, very relieved today, finished the estate which i expected to be worse hit and looks like the wind took it away in a different direction and so far only 2 houses affected. I got talking to a chap who used to be involved in specialist cleaning jobs and he proper put the wind up me. Reckoned the pvc would have to stripped back 4 to 5 layers, and he named some sort of cleaner which costs £50 to £60 for a small bottle which you cant carry around with you with out the neccesary  creditation etc and said brake fluid would work but didnt recommend it  !!!  :o. ( brake fluid ffs). Anyway, went to do the neighbour of the customer who rang me and their car was covered in the stuff though the windows wernt too bad. I popped next door to have a chat and he showed me round but to my surprise was told that the "specialist cleaner" still hadnt turned up so he had had a go himself and to his credit managed to get most of it off the glass and his car.  Of course i asked him what he used to get it off expecting some  expensive specialized cleaning agent but was rather taken back by his answer.....     "Fairy Liquid" !   :).  Fairy liquid has become a bit of a dirty word since wfp has been so popular and id forgotten just what a great product it is. It was pointed out to me later on today that thats what they use to get oil off birds that have become contaminated after oil spills so yeah why not. I still do bungalows the traditional way and deliberately use so call;ed superior detergents rather than fairy but once this has run out im going back to the old faithful. Lot happier today.

Washing up liquid was probably the most obvious degreaser to try. Shame you were looking to complicate it more than it needed to be
