Pumps knackered
« on: June 12, 2017, 03:00:11 pm »
My son has systematically ruined about 5 pumps over the last year
When he finally decided to stop buying new ones and to try to find out why this is happening, i realised it's most likely that he is blocking his online filter with resin and running them dry.
When run dry, is it the bushes that will be burnt out or are there internal bearings that need replacing?
Just wondering,  as I have around five of the beggars lying around that may be repairable
If it is easily done, do any of you know of where these pumps, (2 Shurflo and 3 Vyair) can be repaired?
Or are the bushes easily replaced?
Might save him some money if he can get them repaired  i suppose.. Appreciate anyone's help.
Cheers
Jon

Im sure they can be run dry anyway but what is actually wrong with them ?
Are they failing to even run  ?

I have had a few apart over the years , not really much to go wrong  , you have one bearing on one end of the shaft and a brass bush on the other , the bearing can seize or the brass bush could be dry (no longer impregnated with oil ) both fixable .
The brushes could  be worn out , or the armature they touch can be well worn also .
Other than that its only really down to the big lump of copper wire on the motor being  shot or the the pump head itself (triple rubber plunger  thing ) cant remember the name of it , its available as a spare any way .
Put it this way , you have plenty of parts to chop and change , if you can be bothered !

I would guess it's unlikely to mechanically wear out FIVE pumps in a year.
Are you sure it's not an electrical problem that's causing the failures?

All the pumps seem electrically ok, but they act just like they are airlocked

if this is the case best just run without filters , we have been running these pump for over 30 years without filters besides the amount of chems they have had in them in the time there in service never had them let us down like this

Are you using flow controllers?
I ran for a while without a flow controller, using an aquatap to control flow. I burnt through 2 pressure switches on a pump within a month.

Firstly, you should have the pump BEFORE the DI vessel this way resin cannot block the strainer. Second, no resin should get to the strainer anyway so maybe the vessel internal strainers are faulty and/or blocked? Clean the slits with a tooth brush.

It sounds to me like a restriction via either the pump strainer or vessel strainer. My pump is about 8 years old and never missed a beat- Shurflo.

If its spinning but not pumping i reckon its the diaphragm , thats the triple headed rubber bit i was on about earlier , you can get them from Varitech £18.91 + vat , part no 94-390-06 ,
If that is gunged or torn , that could be your problem .

Just stripped mine down to show you , i have never replaced a diaphragm in 12 years , the good thing is you dont need to pull the whole pump apart to check it , its only 6 screws at the pressure switch end on a shurflo anyway , the diaphram is the white bit , it just pops off from the yellow surround , i have just noticed on mine that between the yellow surround and the aluminium piece connected to it is totally minging , this could be a good place to check too !

If they are the old vyair pumps you're stuffed if you need a diaphragm, they changed the pump about a year ago and don't supply spares for the old ones. If you can easily access the pressure switch your stuffed, if your struggling to even know where it is, you're in luck and it's a new model.

i bet your not happy with him jonboy!5 pumps in a year?they should at least be lasting 3 or 4 years (used every working day).ive had 2 pumps in 7 years.i just chuck them away and buy another.i cant be bothered taking them apart and getting parts for them.

he must be doing something seriously wrong somewhere during his working day.

hope you get it sorted mate.5 pumps is ridiculous in a year. ::)roll
price higher/work harder!
