Usually it is not enough chlorine in a pool that makes the eyes sting, its just the legal limit of use isnt

enough to counter act the urine and other nasties. Best, Dave

It is not the chlorine that normally causes the problem, but chloramines, which are created as chlorine attaches itself to impurities in the pool.

Chloramines are removed by chlorine shock treatment.

Alternatively, you can sanitise the pool using Bromine, but Bromine and Chlorine cannot be mixed, so you would have to empty the pool, backflush everything and refill the pool.

The customer could look at ozone generation or salination (salt treatment) but these need large lumps of hardware to be installed.

For pool chemicals, I use John Preston Pools & Spas, 01772 882500, www.johnpreston.info

Your customer needs to backwash the pool on a regular basis to ensure the TDS(total dissolved solids) are removed.
This is the top six inches of the water.
pool should be topped up with fresh water.
Chlorine does not smell it's all the pollutants in the water (sweat, urine, hair gels etc)
You can get HTH granules (drums) from albion chemicals based in bradford who provide leisure facilities.
Very stringent H&S should be used and they will provide safety material data.
Or do they have a dosing system (sodium Hypoclorite and  co2 dosing mixed creates the free chlorine.
Hope the above helps but be careful as you should officially be pool plant trained operator for undertaking the above work.
worked in Leisure for 10 years.
Any local leisure pool/centre would be pleased to give you some advice so go and see someone if unsure.
