inguinal hernia...how long off?
« on: May 10, 2017, 07:53:00 am »
Hi all.
Pretty much as the title says..
I'm having a hernia repair on NHS  soon (holpefully). If anyone has had one, how long did you have off from window cleaning and when you returned, how many hours a day did you work?
Thanks in advance
Bob.

A Friends just had two done over coarse last 3 months
First one one standard two weeks off
Second one 4 weeks off 2 weeks no driving
Taken him 3 weeks after the 4 weeks to get back to a reasonable day, first week back was really bad for him

Another friend had key hole back after a week

But everyone is different type of surgery is different key hole  seems to be a lot quicker less invasive better recovery

Depends what type of op and what they do in your area

I felt ready to go back to work after 2 weeks, having spoken with my GP who advised doing a couple of hours and building up to a full day, with no heavy lifting etc.

This I did and had no problems with it.

Makes no difference the healing is the same from within I had one done 3 years ago keyhole, with an open cut you risk the chance of tearing the stitches that's the difference. I had about a week off went back to work and took it easy and  even after 6 months still didn't feel right due to the scar tissue forming round your new artificial stomach lining lol.

Doesn't exercise and not being overweight help prevent a hernia?

Exercise is  one of the main reasons people get hernias

You can be the fittest person in the world if genetically you have a weak stomach lining and you do rigorous exercise that involves straining through the abdomen or groin, the chances are you'll get one.

Loads of people have them they don't all pertrude through the lining some are deeper down in the tissue you just feel a dull ache that comes and goes through straining, you may have a particular WFP job you do which involves stretching at a certain angle which sets it off then after a day or so it'll disappear again then come back that's how I found out i had 1. Actually I had 2 its normally always 2 you'll get at once.

i had 1 , right hand side, groin,    2 weeks before i could walk , but still painfull,     put leaflets out,  back after 1 month off,  not worth agravating it,   you are healing inside.     takes months to heal up.       i had to advertise to get some help from a experienced wfp cleaner,      luckilly i got a dedcent chapie.     had him for 2 months, doing most of work.          after 7 months i still  keep aware of putting strain when working at awkward angles with pole.     if im not comfortable ill leave it  .        my work now is building up so fast   i cant afford to  take any more months off.
im back at gym now but no strain on heavy weights,    its all changed now in lifestyle.          dont stretch,  you an weaken the scar

Keyhole is a lot less intrusive.
You don't cut through loads of tissue and muscle. Quicker healing.
Less chance of infection

I must have been very fortunate to feel great straight after my op, which surprised the medics who treated me.  I was prescribed pain killers which I didn't need and was able to return to work after 2 weeks with no side effects at all.

That was 6 years ago. I am 55 now and trad, and still physically in reasonable nick.
