those who don't have roof racks
« on: January 20, 2017, 10:58:55 am »
Hi.

Need a newer van this year, as old ford escort is not viable with repairs needed in September to pass m.o.t.

Happy to get another van but problem is all vans now taller.

I like putting van in  my garage.
Garage is in a block and not attached to my property, it has the canopy style up and over door.

I don't want to lose the option of not being able to garage my van as its handy in winter also parking can be an issue where I live.

Sometimes my current van goes in my garage and family car goes outside garage door.

I know if new van can't fit in garage I will suddenly have parking problems.

I like the Citroen berlingo, it may squeeze in my garage without roof rack.

I am a one man wfp' er.

Interested to see if any on here don't have roof racks and use telescopic or little giant ladders.

I do have customers with flat roofs and customers where I undo bolts on gates so a ladder is essential.

Was thinking would a small treble ladder go inside a Citroen berlingo.

Anyone know the lowest height vans.
Attracted to berlingo as it has the extra seat in front.

I know its small but would fit me Mrs and daughter in which would be useful sometimes.

Any advice on my conundrum 😁

On all these vans the aerial will be an issue. even if they just fit in.

In the early days this was a real problem for Berlingo Multispace owners. Often we took a vehicle out to a potential customers home to see if it would go in the garage. In the vast majority the car didn't fit in.

The older Berlingo's had very soft suspensions. It could be that filling your tank with water before putting it away might make it easier. But you will have to remove the aerial.

Vauxhall Astra Vans are still around - I think they had a payload of 550kgs and have a lower roof line.

I have new shape connect LWB van 4.8 metre long
Can get a 3 section Zarges ladder inside as bulkhead is designed to fit large boards in the van.
I too keep my van in garage

If you want more info let me know

Mr B
If in doubt.....Leave it out !!

I have an older shape Berlingo which only has 2 seats but has a metal frame behind the driver's seat which looks like a ladder.

I have a 6 foot point ladder and a telescopic trad pole which fit in if I rest them on one of the rungs of this frame.

Also, the passenger seat folds forwards to give more space.

Hope this helps.

I would do some measuring of garage door, width and height. Will give u some guide lines of how big u can go.

Roof racks make a big difference so if u thinking of adding one allow for extra height.

Kangoo, berlingo, connect sized vans should all be ok as them come under car derived vans and should easy fit in, Nissan nv200 is also small

Thanks everyone.

Spruce I always enjoy your posts, I may pick your brains when I get to the buy new/second hand or lease stage.

Brian thanks for info on your van, very nice the new ford van's.

Johnny b thanks for info on your van.

Matt.
Yes lots of measuring up to do, I think the berlingo will go in without a roof rack but not with roof rack.
(as spruce mentioned, remove aerial).

So option of fitting a ladder inside van.
Watched a video of little giant ladder being used for access onto extension.
Failed, guy testing had safety harness.

My garage is the up and over canopy door which has less headroom than the roller shutter style garage doors.

Thought about changing garage door to style mentioned but i believe these need electric to open and close.

My garage is in a block of 4 about 30 metres away from my property.
No electric or water supply 😐

Also I'm lease hold so in theory I need to ask permission before changing garage door I'd imagine.

Will check dimensions of vans, problem is you have to contact dealership for measurements with roof rack added not very good at getting back in touch😞

Wish they still made ford escort vans have another tomorrow, perfect height for ladders on roof, what's the thinking behind new vans all being taller is it all to do with fitting pallets inside.

Thanks again everyone.
Lee.

I wouldn't be without this set of ladders, My son has a set upright (closed down) in his lwb connect and I have a set laying lengthways in my combo. We both have roof racks but they are never used. These ladders are pretty much a copy of the little giant ones. I got them in a sale price at £84.99..........but they are quite heavy at 15kgs. I use them as a step ladder, or pulled out to get on flat roofs or "A" frame to get over 6 foot gates. Love 'em   ;) ;D

I am wfp and although I do have ladders on the roof I never use them. There's no point them being their really and the o ly time I use ladders for conny roofs then a pair of step ladders or extendable would suffice shoved in the back.

Do u need ladders ?

Hi Adam, another option is to ditch jobs that require ladders.

I would have to go through George program and see how many customers that would affect.

Hi Fieldsy  link doesn't work but I have probably same ladders.

Thought there would be good for getting over gates.

I must be a weed, found them heavy when put in the A frame setting and struggled getting them either side of gates.

Also felt vulnerable transferring off of these onto flat roofs.

Link works for me, thats weird ?.......but yh. they are heavy, but I have a knack of getiing them over now.........really can't be arsed with placing a straight ladder up and trying to climb over. I also find the top tread makes a great route for the hose so it slides over and lays between the uprights of the ladder when pulling into the back garden...or wherever you are going  ;)

When I had a berlingo it only had two seats not three.

Being a small van I just bought a  decent set of roof bars to carry my set of long triples, conservatory ladder and combi steps about. No probs.

When I scrapped the van off I gave a load of stuff away including the roof bars, brand new spare wheel, jack etc to help another chap out as you do.

The van I have now being much larger and taller had already a pull down type ladder rack fitted so I saved myself a few bob.
Regards to the type of ladders you want to carry about it's up to the individual what thay want to use. For me I tend to use the most appropriate ladder for the job  should I ever need to use them.

The triples are fitted with an ankalad (folding outrigers). I also carry in the van a microlite standoff that can rest on a flat or tiled pitched roof for extra stability.  I also have a set of easi deck ladder spurs that will fit on any type of ladders as I've a few more in the lockup . You can never have too many ladders so they say.  ;D

Dont have any flat roofs or take any on.

Gates are always unlocked, very very rarely do i need to hop over and if i do a pair of step ladders would do.

Connys, i use step ladders

Latches, again should be unlocked but i usually stand on a water barrel if they are not.

Dont take on any work requiring ladders and that solves your problem

I agree with above poster however if the gate is locked dont stabd and charge full price, it will be unlocked in the future and you wont risk ripping uour tugal off leaning iver the gate

When I had a Duccato a small set of triples fitted inside to get onto flat roofs
Now the same van as Brian (connect) I only have steps  for unlocking gates.
Just  told the few custards that I no longer carried ladders.
Lost 2 and kept 6 that were happy for me to miss those windows.
It's your call

What about a Bipper/Nemo/Fiorino?
It's a game of three halves!

Good thinking  Gold!

Been in touch with a dealership to get height measurements+roof rack, await the answer.

If it looks like I can get in garage then I'll think I'll hire a bipper or nemo etc for a couple of days, to see how I get on with it,

Make sure my barrels reel and hopefully pole fits inside van.

I do have a bit of extra unused space in the. Back of current escort van so nemo etc could be doable 😉
