Hello Guys what is your finish times for those you employ?...

We follow the seasons so in winter 4-5 dependant on light and in the summer 5.30  2 of the guys are on salary and they get paid the same wether they finish early or late just taken on another guy on hourly and we have agreed that if he docent want to take a lunch break then I will pay him same and he can finish at 5....the other 2 won't do that as they want their lunch break but are now complaining that I am being unfair by letting him finish at 5 when they don't?! any Ideas?

No 1 on his own (the one that finishes earlier) and the other 2 in 1 van whilst I am away for a few weeks...the funny thing about it is the one on his own has been getting all located jobs done on time the other 2 have been finishing late and not getting all the jobs done and they are moaning it's unfair even though they have less in theory than he has on his own

Finish time is when all work given for day has been completed -  surely their employment contract should have something along those lines.

Two guys in one van will always run behind. You can say to them you were given equal amount of work for manpower yet single guy managed to complete it faster than both you together. If you wish I can swap you around however all work must be done in timely fashion.(pretty sure it won't be)

Alternatively you can say management discretionary decision was made upon reviewing employee's circumstances.

You can't please everyone, but I would've thought the best deal all round would be 'job and knock'  for all as long as the jobs are finished to a very good standard

They are entitled by law to a break.....

You need to be carefull how you word it, i assume they have got contracts ? You may have no problem, until there is a problem, or parting of the ways. If anyone wants to forgo their breaks i'm sure they can, i'm not so sure they can do it with your knowledge. Thats my understanding of it anyway.

Good points... in thier contracts finish time is 5.30 every day with 30 mins lunch break that includes winter but I always let them finish early in the winter due to shorter nights etc

The option is down to them I do not encourage nor discourage taking them it is down to them one employee just prefers to work through it and eat on the go  the other 2 insist on wanting to take them but are then moaning that the other employee is being treated differently...

I done a bit of subby work for the window cleaning company a few years ago, Jordan was just starting out in window cleaning. I had to train him up, he learned quick and was a hard worker. He use to get from reading to ash everyday even though he couldn't drive at the time, yet surprisingly was never late. I was always late and only lived 10mins away

Would it not be wiser to be job and knock for them all? I mean you obviously have a figure you want them to hit each day with that days work. Just tell them all regardless of lunch break etc that the sooner they finish they days work with good standards the earlier they can go home! Will be less stress on you and something for your guys to work harder for and have less of a lunch break?.
I dont employ as i only sub out work so maybe its a law thing with PAYE but i couldnt give a damn what hours they work as all i want is my cut from the work and work to be done to a standared im happy with.

This is how I work. There can be issues with quality though so it needs monitoring. But I think if the employees are well paid (mine are) and they feel valued then when made aware of quality issues they will sort them out.

Thanks for that guys I tried it a few years back with some other guys at the time and I had nothing but trouble with quality and complaints no matter what I said to them...
that's why I have tried to stay away from it as it's more inventive to just rush but it's still worth maybe trialling again...I can just imagine the arguments he's been given an easier day than me etc etc!
I'm considering paying on a percentage of turnover per employee model and then saying job and knock off but saying if I get a complaint you go back and re do free of charge and if they cancel due to a poor job or your poor handling they will loose the money earns from the job so should give them incentive to be a bit more conscientious if they think they'll lose money if they do a bad job...

they get paid a days rate for 8.5 hrs and can leave when they have finished their work sheet.

if there are any complaints they have to go back in their own time
