I've been diagnosed with a double inguinal hernia, and I'm booked in for keyhole surgery on the 24th of next month. My wife has health insurance through her work so I get to go private, which is nice!
It looks like it is probably an outpatient job, although I may end up over-nighting if the surgery is later in the day.
The advice I've seen is no driving or exertion of any sort for one week, then anything between a further 2-5 weeks before going back to work, and even then being cautious (small days, lighter work). Being primarily a WFP user I am conscious of the strain that can put through the core muscles so don't want to rush back and unravel...
I have rejigged some of my work where necessary, some will just have to be delayed, and a couple of friends have offered to work with me to take a bit of the strain off.
I just wondered if anyone here has had experience of this surgery and the likely recovery time? I realise experiences vary from person to person (I'm 46 and reasonably fit, if that makes a difference to recovery), but it would be useful to get a sense of what to expect.

I had the same, rest for 2 weeks and your be fine, take it easy though

Had same done about 17 years ago through keyhole minimum 6 to 12 weeks before any heavy lifting,  don't try doing work to soon other wise you will regret it

Had 1 done 2 years ago I had about 10 full days -2 weeks off work,it takes time to heal internally I didn't feel right for a year you feel tight inside around the scar tissue are above the groin hip area. I have another 1 now on the other side which doesn't bother me as much which I'll have done in the next year or so.

Thanks for your replies thus far,  With my work schedule I can have at least three full weeks off, if I feel up to it then a lighter week to get back in to it if I want. I do have some commercial booked in towards the end of March so I may have to get some assistants on board if I'm still tender.

Out of interest, are hernias common among window cleaners, particularly those hauling WFP around all day? I know a few locally who have had hernias, I don't know how common it is among the general populace...

I had a single inguinal hernia op 6 years ago. I was 48 at the time. I went into surgery first thing in the morning, and was home by early afternoon. After coming out of surgery, I felt absolutely no ill effects at all, which surprised the nurses .

I was advised to rest for 6 weeks, but after a fortnight I was desperate to get back to work , I went to my GP and asked if he thought it would be ok if I were to go back to work for a few hours a day, then build up to full time again. He advised me to be very careful, do no heavy lifting (I am trad but my ladders and bucket are light enough) or to put any strain on myself, so I did, and have had no problems with it whatsoever.

I've had two hernia ops. Last one was a few years ago when we got heavy snow and freezing weather so lucky for me the 6 weeks I was off I could not have really worked anyway. It peed me off somewhat all the same as was a repair for the first op I had previously as they did not put that gauze stuff in the first time.

i dont think so.ive never had a hernia and ive been window cleaning 23 years.on the other hand my younger brother has had 2 now and he sits on his backside all day in front of a PC.WORK THAT ONE OUT!

Just want to say thank you to all the genuinely helpful responses to my questions.

I will add that I find the tedious smutty comments boring, juvenile and frankly  pathetic. I know this probably qualifies as "banter" but frankly would be more suited to a "lads" website.
