badly fitted edges

when you survey a customers carpets (those that do ;) ) What would be your course of action if the carpet was found to be incorrectly fitted around the edges, I just read an old article from red carpet in which this happened to him and people were posting about The british standard for carpet installation, I thought a few tacs to hold it in place would suffice  :D

Would be interesting to hear all your views

Twice this year Ive had big problems on Brintons Belltwist poorly fitted one using only double sided tape!!!!  both receded(shrank) and required a fitters attention...I now explain to customer that If poorly/incorrectly fitted problems can arise and fault is with the fitting not the cleaning....Simon

If the carpet has been poorly fitted and you are unable to secure it properly with either tacks, ring nails (my preferred weapon!), concrete nails or staples, then don't clean it!

If you shrink it, it's your fault and your job to rectify it. Simple!

If necessary call out a carpet fitter before you clean it and get them to secure it down for you, then charge the customer for it.

It's a heck of a lot easier doing it that way than trying to get a fitter in to stretch a carpet that you've shrunk, which is sometimes impossible.

Plus your reputation remains intact and the customer has a clean and properly fitted carpet.

I have called on the services of a fitter only twice, once to stretch a carpet that I shrunk(cost me £75) and once to secure a carpet before I cleaned it (cost the customer £20)

When I first started well over 20 years ago, I would secure loose badly fitted carpet with nails every few inches, that is until I punctured a water pipe and havnt put a nail in since. I just tell them how it is, what they can expect and if I think there may be slight shrinkage because of whatever, I tell them.

Is it possible to stretch the carpet back as it was???

Do you think it would be cost productive to secure the carpet yourself then charge the customer, I mean properly secure it the way a fitter would??

After a carpet has been shrunk, it will only stretch back so far.  The carpet will not normally shrink over its full length, but only certain parts (where it's been overwet or overworked), this is what causes problems for fitters when they are refitting it as they first have to find where it has shrunk and then stretch it from there out to the edges.
