Agree with Tosh all about the layers the Apache jacket isn't heavy but warm and waterproof , Generally for cold weather merino thermal top & bottoms good logo half zip  fleece and logo fleece Gilet if its wet then the jacket goes on .

I bought myself a Buffalo Jacket this afternoon. Always fancied one, supposed to be really warm even when wet through.

Might get one of these to - got to keep the tax bill down!

I don't work through to heavy a down fall, so my regatta dover coat did the job. .
This year goin to try Regatta Carrington 3 in 1 jacket(on sale at the moment), layering I find better. . also use their trouser's waterproof and thermal lined. .

You're right, I love the Buffalo - I bought the zipped version and it's friggin hot even when undone - too hot for this time of year. Just got the Keela waterproof fleece - don't like that at all so it's going back. Might get another Buffalo - so light and comfy!
