public liability insurance
« on: October 12, 2015, 09:36:43 pm »
Just renewed mine and noticed in small print does not cover property worked on.
Not in my last documents small print.
So I am guessing that if I damage a window I am not covered for that window?
But what if I put my pole against the window leave the pole on resting on the window to go to van and a gust of wind blows the pole on to customers car is this not covered as its in the property worked upon
If this is the case what is the point in having it when it don't cover you.
Any one know of any insurance that will cover the window you work on?
Thanks

Dave Willis

A plan do but it would pay to ask what's covered and what isn't.

Most of those policies will have a £250 excess, so it is unlikely you would claim for damaging a window unless it was leaded or something.

Yes - I have a £250 excess on my policy. I pay £14.57 a month for £1m public liability but am happy to pay a little more knowing that I'm actually covered for what I'm cleaning.

You really need to go back to your insurer to confirm exactly what you are covered for.

^^ I agree.
With the excess of £250.00 you won't claim on replacing a damaged window pane.  But you can't make an informed decision without knowing what you are covered for.

10 out of 10 for reading through your renewal and comparing this years cover to last years though.

Best contact the insurance company you have the policy with if it doesn't clearly state in the policy document what you are covered for and what services you offer are covered too.

I had the misfortune to have a claim brought against me for property being worked upon and the settlement figure was just under 4k . I'm so glad that I had the correct cover in place and not just public liability  or I would have been out of pocket just a wee bit  ::)roll

I felt like crap when it happend that's for sure shrek ;D

I've always been covered by gleaming insurance (hiscox) as is the most comprehensive policy for cleaners.
Others I tried to get cover for the activities/services I wanted covered including property being worked upon and gave up in the end as was a pain in the arse trying to get quotes  so went with gleaming in the end and I'm sure glad I did.

This is the clause wording
What do you make of it

Section 19
Property Being Worked Upon
We shall not be liable in respect of Damage to
property being worked upon if the Damage
arises from such work.

Simply put you will not be covered whilst cleaning if you damage something.

If you also use any type of cleaning products you defo will not be covered either as you have no treatment risk cover.

That is a grey area as most would want to weedle out of any claim if they can.

This is frightening tbh.  I would see that as a next to worthless insurance policy - could we say it's not worth the paper its printed on?  Unfortunately, its not what we make of it, its what the insurance company who issued the policy is trying to hide behind.

So what would happen if you tripped whilst walking to the first window to be cleaned, fell and your pole damaged your customer's car?

This is the point - how can they make something worthless sound appealing to make you buy it?
