Guys with uprated pumps?
« on: September 20, 2015, 02:41:24 pm »
How are you getting on with them? I've used the piddly 5lpm pumps since I started out - because that's what I was sold. I've always thought the output to be barely enough and have my flow dials more or less maximum all the time which kind of makes the controller a waste of time. I'm thinking of dumping my cupboard full of pumps and buying something with a bit of go.

There's a Shurlow 100psi that does 6.8lpm, a 60psi that does 8lpm and even  a 45psi that does11.3lpm
How much pressure do we really need?

I thought all this a few months back, 10 lpm I had in my head, this is the way forward, bought a few pumps from vyair and they was a total disaster. No help from them and within a week or so I had to replace back to shurflo, now using the 6.8 lpm 100 psi from Aqua.
The higher flo helps when you have large areas to clean IMO but if just doing domestics or buildings were windows are here and there it's no great difference.

I think to use some of the bigger shurflo pumps ( and they do look and sound nice ) you would have to use hose with an id of at least 10ml, maybe more, or the pumps pressure switch just keeps kicking in and cuts out, this then leaves you with no or very little pressure at the brush head onto the glass or a little dribble out of each jet. These we're some of the problems I incurred using vyair garbage but shurflo would be better I am sure of that,

These 6.8 lpm shurflo are about these best pumps I have found, and at £150 a pair there well priced

Cheers for that Matty - I was considering the bigger pumps, but I use 6mm bore so really no point.

I use 6mm and have used 8mm in the past - I also have a Flojet pump at the moment that sounds a bit odd and has some internal bypass set up that kicks in if the pressure is a tad too high. Flow is nothing to write home about.

I've tried the low pressure high flow pumps, and whilst they ok about 18foot high or whatever they will struggle when you're using say a 27 foot pole at max height and pushing through 100 metres of mini or microbore.

Have you actually compared running a pump wired direct to compare it to your controlled set up flat out ?

I got the standard shuffle and flow jet . Both doing fine ATM . May upgrade to the 6.8 shurflo once it breaks .
Got 2 spare shurflo as I thought they were broken but it was wiring and battery faulty so I have these two spare ,.

Also found this happened with the higher flow pumps, would check by connection up pole hose to reel hose an ground floor, ye loads of pressure pull hose reel out extend pole an connect up ............ No pressure ..... Pull ya ears off time or grab the bottom of them and rub while ya  woosar

I consider it's the bore of the brush jets we use that are the biggest restriction on water flow at the brush head.
I cleaned a conservatory roof recently by bypassing the brush jets and using a piece of pole hose over the brush instead.
Water flow was much improved.
Not really suitable for window cleaning but on conservatory roof cleans works well.

We use100 psi 5L Shurflo pumps which gives more than enough water when using 8mm hose

You might want to check your brush jet size as this limits flow, The newer Gardiner brushes seem to come with the smaller jets which is notable over older larger jets

I use the large 150 psi sure flow not sure of flow rate been using couple years now no problems  find it works better for fan jets
I use 8ml. Mini bore 100 metres

As a general rule of thumb you need 5psi to push water up 10 feet, However that does not take into account restrictions in the system. Hose ID, hose wall expansion, jet size and pump motor efficiency will all have a bearing. 60 PSI will be ok some of the time, 100 PSI will suit most situations as you have pressure to spare. This means the pumps is not having to work as hard to produce the flow you want. a higher litre per min pump may not mean you actually get more water on the glass.
