No expert but I'd say loose/bad connection - check terminals are tight and clean

The mostly likely causes are loose connections either at the battery or along the cable length. Also any damaged worn or exposed connectors or cable will increase the resistance along the cable length. This can mean the pump pulls more current to over come this. Net result of higher current is it feeds the weakness and creates heat.

Over rating and or not fitting a fuse will also mean any potential cable fault will simply get hotter and hotter. The suggestion would be to ensure you have good quality connectors on the battery terminals and avoid crocodile clips. Check you wiring and connections to ensure they are in good condition and tight. Also check the fuse and holder if it is corroded replace it.
