Split relay and start stop tech
« on: May 26, 2015, 09:09:00 pm »
I was looking on Grippatank website and saw that their split relay kit isn't designed for vans with 'Start - stop tech'
This got me thinking, as I wouldn't of known a relay would be a problem with a van with start-stop.

Anyone know of any relays I can use?

Thanks

I'm not really up on the working of split relays, but I do have a van fitted with a grippa system with split relay.my van has stop/start and as yet had no problems so you may be ok to fit it.

The transit custom is a clever little van. I have to use my headlights to make sure my SCR works some days.

Mine is the same
It's not a clever system though

Hi James,

Whilst in some cases the standard SCR relay we sell would work with start stop vehicles, the majority of the start stop vehicles also utilise Regen or Kinetic charging systems, which  can cause the SCR never to kick in and do its job. Also, in some cases, vehicle manufacturers have actually stated to us that fitting an SCR charger will invalidate the warranty of the electric circuit on the vehicle.

Hence why we offer the follow alternative for vehicles with Regen/Kinetic charging systems:  https://www.grippatank.co.uk/12v-24v-intelligent-split-charge-relay-100amp-1827

If £522 is the cost of the solution then I wouldn't bother.

Hi Spruce,

The unit cost is £240.00 + vat. Fitting is optional, but most competent users could install the kit or use a local auto sparky.

I'm just letting my brain roll around for a moment.

I know that Sterling products are the most superior kit available but;

Sterling list their 60 amp unit (BBW 1260) for £344.90 including VAT and the 120 amp (BBW12120) for £499.90 including VAT.

Looking at the description on your website of "12v 60/120 AMP Battery to Battery Charger Kit," I wouldn't know which unit it was. However, your part no infers that it is a 120 amp.

If it is a 120 amp then something tells me your pricing of £240 + VAT doesn't sound right.  (With your markup included in the price of £240, I can't believe that Sterling would give you a discount to achieve that. 10 years ago we could only get 15% from them as a commercial new van dealer.)

I see you don't have stock.

I would consider installing a solar charging panel on the roof of my van to trickle charge my leisure battery and supplement that with a bench charge as needed. My opinion though.

But I'm afraid that the description comments regarding the issues with kinetic recovery are going to affect us more and more in the future. Motor manufacturers are being required to police the vehicle emissions legislation by making it difficult to work around.
