as ive got a car as well as my work van ive now got a back up system to keep me ticking over when van is off the road due to repairs/MOT etc.

four 25L barrels(100L)

backpack

22 ft SLX with 30m of pole hose

my van MOT is due soon and ill probably have to have a few jobs done on it to get it through so it could be 2 or 3 days lost so ill just crack on with my work now instead of having the time off.wfp tops and trad ground floors.100L should last me all day(5-6 hours "on the glass").

does anybody else do this?

I have my mot / service done during Christmas break ... drop van off at mates garage and pick it up few days later .. no loss of time.

the thing is over the course of the year ian you ll probably have the van in the garage a few times esp if you have an older vehicle(usually)so you could lose a weeks work or your van could just go altogether and you could be without a van for weeks until you buy another one.

2004 combo so yup have lost odd day due to minor stuff ... clutch pedal for example .... if it was gonna be off road for a while then maybe buy a knacker for £500 till mine fixed then sell knacker on hopefully for £500 .... end of year upgrading to Transit (hopefully) would make sense to keep combo for a while till new van proven to be reliable

My Vivaro had a clutch problem just before christmas and I had to muddle my way around it. I have a bloke who works that van and I had to pay for his downtime.
So I went out and bought a second van and fitted it out and had it liveried and use it as a spare van / canvasing vehicle. I took the view that its a second mobil advert..

Have just done the same Dazmond, built a trolley system from the tips on here including Tosh's controller.

I lost a few weeks last year due to a muppet driving into the back of my van and wrecking the back doors,
they wouldn't lock so my insurance wouldn't allow me to keep using the van as it wouldn't be covered if stolen.

This is one of the benefit of having newer vans. Usually.

Planned servicing, same as Ian. No work lost.

As for buying an old van to get through-no chance.
If it gets that bad you can hire a vw transporter for £40 a day round the corner from me. I'm sure other hire companies would be similar prices.

the way my work is scheduled lately its a few days  rather than a week before my next months onslaught!yeah thats what im planning on doing but always handy to have emergency back up if needed.

Here is an idea folks. Book your van in for an mot at 8.ooam on a monday morning . Pick it back up at 9.00am and work all week with it.
IF it needs work doing to it book it in with the garage for the following friday afternoon/saturday for getting it fixed.

This plan = very little disruption to your working week.

OR

Wait right up until your MOT is due to have it inspected and keep your fingers crossed it needs nothing doing to it. If it does need work you are goosed as you wont be able to drive it around working from it!!

I have a trolley set up which I lend out to a friend so worse case scenario.

Am also in the process or doing a pallet set up,  basically I have a pallet with a 300L tank, I already have spare hose and reel so am going to pick up an 11L DI bottle a pump and controller and hey presto. I can then drop this off at sites and use a pump truck trolley to shift it about.

i get my garage to take my van for its MOT.i cant be bothered to take it myself and then they ring me up to tell me what its failed on!their usually very good and get it fixed ASAP.sometimes though they are busy and it could be 2 days later before i get my van back.i take my ladders off and drain my tank and take my poles out so having my car ready with a backpack,pole and barrels etc will come in handy if ive got work i want to get cleaned in the meantime.

Yeah,  same  here  Chum.
Usually, if it does fail mot, it doesn't take more than a couple of days to sort a problem out unless it's something really major!!  So following Dave Kents advice should work quite well.

100L will last 5 hours at least just cleaning tops with the pole ive found.ill also fill backpack up before i leave so thats an extra 19L.its amazing how much water you save when you havent got as much esp on 4 weekly cleans.

Me too. I thought Daz, has a few days or even a week off at the end of every month anyway ? Makes sense to plan the MOT in then, you can book MOT a month before it expires. I really can't see the sense in having a spare system/set up for something that is planned and comes around once a year.
