Shurflo pump failure - anyone repaired one?
« on: March 12, 2015, 06:20:32 pm »
Had my first ever shurflo pump failure, working away and the flow started to "pulse" popped back to van to check battery condition only to see the controller flash DE (dead end) for 5 or so seconds then show flow rate And pump starts but sounds like a mouse chewing a bag of bolts  :o runs for 20 secs then stops and controller then dead ends again this keeps repeating.  So I'm guessing something inside has failed, has anyone had this and will fitting a valve kit sort it ? Or is it destined for the scrap heap, interested to know as if I repair I can keep it as a back up.

Cheers
Darran

Sounds like the brushes have worn out , it can be sorted if the brushes are available that is , no instant fix so dont bin it just yet , it could also be the bearings , they are not bearings as most would think , as in little silver balls contained in a holding body , they are actually oil impregnated brass type hula hoops objects in simple terms !
Im not calling you simple though Smudger  ;D

Dont bin it is all i would say , if you have the time it could be looked at at a later date as a little down time job , after all it probably does still have a good armature , pressure switch , permanent magnet body , and diaphram .

I have a couple of pics to put up in a mo of a rebuild i did , took very small amount of time , it was that or bin 2 pumps , all i did was make 1 from 2 !

Don't worry Duncan I already have as per the original post, if it's fixable then it will make a nice spare  ;)

There's bugger all inside them easy to take apart could be the bearing siezed or the brushes. Need a couple of cocktail sticks to part the brushes on reassembly.

Dave , its going good , not all as i planned though , i have only done 4 days so far , well half days really , i got away light with how i was affected by the stroke physically .
A lot of it for me is in the head , its kind of like learning the ropes again , and other times its second nature , really hard to explain !
I went out on Tuesday and did 5 hours , felt great whilst on the glass , felt great until i went to bed , woke up on Wednesday and couldnt get out of bed until 5 pm , its going to take some time if i do get back to how i was .
I still dont have the ok to drive , my old man is doing that at the mo so thats one less financial burden to worry about anyway , i had an MRI and EEG last week , the EEG came back as being back to normal , so its all on the MRI now , if the blood clot has broken down all should be well .

I should know for sure next week , then its up to DVLA to issue my liscense back .

Although i wish this had never happened it does have a good side , it made me look at the round with wider eyes , i can already see that i was holding a lot of dead wood , i only have the cream left after my little cull , i am working at least 2 hours less a day and earning more to boot !

I am , how they say , working smarter  ;)

Here's the diaphram assembly, i found these hard to find............
http://www.purefreedom.co.uk/shurflo-pump-replacement-valve-assembly-kit.html

If you intend taking the plastic pump head off the metal body, i couldn't do it and had to get someones help, and a few screws did snap of in the metal pump body.

Zip ties.

Thanks for that.

I replaced the brushes recently and I wish I'd have thought of that. I used chicken wire. Took me several evenings of cursing and frustration (not sexual) to get the thing assembled and working.

An old trick that was a thin piece of copper wire in the days before zip ties. (Showing my age here.)

Darran, you also need to very carefully check the commutator. If one of the segments has slightly raised or lifted, then one of the circuits of the armature has failed and is worthless.
