l5 heater gas checked
« on: February 05, 2015, 05:52:25 pm »
Our employe  won't use the gas heater because it's not been looked at and improved
By a gas enginer. Who gets them checked every year?

Doesn't matter who gets them checked, you have an employee and your obliged to ensure their safety same with ladders I now have to inspect and sign off all ladders and steps at least then I'm covered should the worst happen

I know it's down to me for he's safety. Where do I find a expert to inspect one?
I can't see a gas enginer passing one.told him not to use it

Ahh ok your tone came across as "if no one else on the forum gets them checked I won't either"

Sorry for misunderstanding.

I'm sure any gas registered plumber can pass it.
I'd be very interested to see what he has to say regarding ventilation etc.. Not that I am saying raving the door open inst enough, but rules and regs may mean a proper vented flue etc...

Interesting! The trouble is that the gas regs that govern catering vans say its needs to have adequate ventilation. What is adequate ventilation? Adequate is open to interpretation. I've seen a catering trailer with a gas safety certificate issued using an L5 gas boiler inside the kitchen area - no flue. But there was an extractor over the griddle area.

Gas is regulated in caravans, but there are no regulations that I can find that govern installed gas heaters in wfp vans. Common sense says that they should be ventilated outside through a roof vent, but you can't judge the safety of an item if there aren't any regulations. The same applies to roofers and plumbers. There is no regulation on how they are to secure and operate their equipment safely.

The trouble is that common sense to you may not be common sense to someone else.

I would be very surprised if a gas engineer would issue a certificate to a fitted gas appliance that isn't vented in an enclosed van, but then I still can't get my head around that catering trailer.

If staff are worried, then best they don't use it. Probably why diesel heaters are better with staff, although very expensive.

The gas requirements for caravans are also a bit confusing - they don't make sense IMHO. A gas water heater needs to be vented outside. There must also be a hole in the floor should there be a gas leak. As gas is heavier than air then it will find its way outside.

Arthur from SureClean Systems in Ireland has a gas water heater which is in a cabinet.

The gas bottles are in a sealed container vented through the floor. His cabinet sits at the back doors and it is vented outside by the rear doors being open. That doesn't make sense to me but then this is the way some windies have their setups - on one of the rear doors.

Reach2Clean did used to sell a setup with a sealed gas compartment vented outside through a hole in the floor as per Arthur's cabinet. However they include a Universal Rinnai 58e Gas Water Heater Flue Kit.

This Reach2clean setup makes more sense to me, but it is assuming that the caravan gas regulations apply to wfp vans requiring that gas bottles are storage in a compartment outside the sleeping area.

However, a gas stove in a caravan doesn't have to be vented outside. I don't think the gas fire needs to be vented outside either as long as its below a certain kw (I stand corrected if anyone knows differently).

I've heard of a cleaner who visits this forum from time to time who has his gas heater fitted to a sack truck along with this gas bottle. If he wants hot he unloads this from the van, leaves it outside and plugs his hose reel into it. Peter Fogwill did the same with his trolley when he still sold fogwashes.
