Can you track an employee by just their phone without them knowing or would you need their iphone account to set it up?

You'd need their iwotsit or Google account.

I could pop a tracker in the van we have them in all of ours the boys this but it's a brilliant tool for tracking and much more Rams tracking its about 20 a month per van 3 year contract and a set up fee of 100 I think you can call them and they will demonstrate for you over the phone and pc  for us it was one of the best things for our business in 2014 if u call them say Carrie from Oddbods Rec d you they do a rag scheme so would be lovely if u could if you were interested x mrs smudger x

Why not just tell employees that you now reserve the right to track?  Surely the idea is to prevent rather than catch.  If I discovered that an employer was tracking me without any warning, I would be tempted to make life difficult for him.  "Forgetting" my phone a lot would only be the start of it.

Getting a second van this year, it'll have tracking in it and whoever drives it will be told it can be tracked.

My van, I want to know where it is.

Are your employees that bad they can't be trusted ??

It's a good idea , but trusting them and being a positive boss would also motivate them as much .

Exactly.  It's not just about the employee but about vehicle recovery in case of theft.  I just think it's the right thing to inform people that tracking is in action.

It doesn't really have anything to do with trust. If you don't trust them, don't employ them.

It's not quite as black and white as that. Trust is a two way thing. Maybe someone is trustworthy but in the past you've had experiences that make it difficult at the very least for you to trust others. Perhaps it makes your life easier regardless.

I've been ripped off by an employee in the past.

That doesn't mean I don't trust my employees though. It would be impossible to operate if I didn't, tracker or not.

I use the tracker to map customer locations, monitor driving habbits and for route planning.

As Scrooge mc soupy says, it's not a trust issue.

The benefits are you can see instantly how the day is going, you get cheaper insurance, we can now prove, if needed that we were on site (when and how long)

For us it quickly highlighted some problems which some jobs time wise, which we can now address.

Also, like everything if your too familiar things start to slip, 5 mins here, 10 mins there, before you know it your paying extra hours all over the place and it can be hard to address this without knowing where things are going wrong, the guys have to meet an average hourly production rate to get a bonus, the tracking has helped with this and we work far more efficiently than before
