Reducing phone bills
« on: April 16, 2006, 12:15:39 pm »
As I use call divert to my mobile I am often paying for the calls I receive which I don't mind.  What I do mind is paying for calls from people trying to sell me advertising all the time. I came across the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) web site and am thinking of using it. Has anyone used this? and if so does it work or can anyone see a down side to using it.

Here is the link   http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

Hi Tihson,

I've been on it for about 18 months and it does work to a reasonable extent.

It's also useful for getting rid of unwanted attention by stating to the caller that you are on tps , they usually put the phone down immediately.

Go for it,

Cheers

You can register your mobile number too.
You'll still get pestered by ufindus though, they are a law unto themselves!  >:(

Iv'e been registered for three years, but still get the odd call and their number is always witheld so you can't prove nothing against them. My calls are also diverted to my mobile so as stated earlier, simply mention to them tps and they appologise and hang up.

I agree with Dave - still get the odd ones - usually selling phones or electric, but it has cut them down considerably.  Except for UFINDUS!!!!!!!!!! Argh

Useful for the elderley too - my mum is registered now and it is less worrying for us to know that she isn't getting pestered by these people.

If you have used someones services before and appear on their
customer database, they can still ring you.
Also several operations are set up outside the UK, these don't have to adhere
TPS.
But it is surprising how quickley they can ring off when told "This number is TPS listed".

i just registered, theres also a corperate TPS you can put all your numbers on  in one go.

i read recently something i never knew, if you ask a company not to call you and remove your number from there list, they have to do this by law,

in the same way as if you were tps, its illegal for them to call you if you have indicated you do not wish them to, tps is simply your 'indication' you dont want them to.

in other words you could just tell some companys not to call you and let others, you telling them that, should hold in thoery (law) the same weight as being tps.

also its now illegal for them to with hold there number.

i ve pointed this out to a few telesales and it soon puts them off trying to sell to you, lol.

Had a lady ring the other day from India. Usual stuff. I explained I was on TPS and she said yes she knows that. They take the TPS flagged database numbers and actively use them. :o

Once I said I was not happy and wanted the company details she said I'm not telling you. However from what she had already told me it was Hutchison/3.

Basically outside UK it cannot be enforced and if you read into what you have to do to complian it's unlikely anyone gets done at all.

i've been regestered with tps for 2 years now & dont get anywhere near as many calls now form company's selling stuff, however i had a cheeky 1 from some phone company telling me the reson i was getting so many sales calls was because i am with bt who sell the numbers to call centre's obiously there's didnt & would be better off changing to them.
basicly same as Mike Osbourne they use tps, as there sales database  ;)

I've been listed for 3 Years, and get very few calls,
but if they have a legitimate reason for you being on their
customer database they can bombard you with calls,
also note not one company in the entire history of TPS or the fax equvilant has ever been prosecuted.
