CH 4 After thoughts

So the second programme has been shown, are we any wiser, are the general public wiser and better informed?

Was this a serious experiment or a couple of hours of cheaply filled in programme time using the public as the cast?

Let's examine the experiment, was it a true experiment? In my eyes no.
There was a gung ho approach to changing everything in the same way in each house.
Where was the control, (ie) the house where conditions were left the same.
Why weren't single things changed in each house differently.

The first could have had a laminate floor layed, the second tiles, another a new carpet, a cleaned carpet, a treated carpet, evict the pets, clean mattress etc, etc.
Each should have been tested to eliminate specific areas.

Were levels of allergen tested before and after, I didn't see the new floor being tested, or more importantly the airborne content. This seems to have been completely overlooked.

What was the reaction when a house was re-visited and the remainder carpet taken out? The child's condition worsened, but was quickly glossed over and dismissed. 'Long term they will be better off', the upset parent was told.

A point was made of showing a mess from under a lifted carpet; not surprising considering the complete lack of cleaning and clutter in this house. Had this carpet ever been vacuumed correctly and frequently enough, I think not, let alone professionally maintained each year.

Why not show a clean carpet and give information as to it's correct maintenance.
Why throw out furniture, it could easily be cleaned and treated.
If all this soft furnishing was so bad, why not throw out the mattress and duvet, and sleep directly on 'lovely laminate' without covers!

The best part for me was when the asthma nurse said that the flimsy net curtains which were in direct sunlight, were full of dust mites (which like to burrow deep and hide from light).......... so following this logic a hard floor must be over-run with them!
Plus what exactly did she propose people put in their windows, anything else replacing the nets would  also become full of mites in the same way!

The programme seemed very rigid and preset ideas were not moved away from.
A bias towards laminate, a disegard for professional cleaning and a completely un-scientific approach.

So was this a serious experiment or a couple of hours of cheaply filled in programme time using the public as the cast?

Regards Ian.
