Water tank and frame needed
« on: September 02, 2014, 10:26:23 am »
Hi all.

Where's the best place for a 650l upright tank and the frame to fit it?

Varitech quoted me over a grand whilst Pure Freedom seemed better at £720 for the tank, a crash tested, pre drilled frame, VAT and delivery.

Does anyone have any suggestions on who to try?

Cheers.

Pure freedom seems like a good deal really..although i don't think they are crash tested especially if your going to fit it yourself. I have a 500lt upright from them very solidly built frames but they still use the standard wydale tanks that aren't really baffled tanks.

I am not very keen on upright tanks full stop, for safety and stability reasons, but i definitely would not have a 650 because of the shape. And i definitely would not trust any claims for having been 'crash tested' with a tank that big. If it is the standard shape 650 tank, with a higher speed impact, because of the height in relation to width, the tank would either rip its mountings clean off, or burst the frame.

As Scottie says, "Ye canna change the laws of physics" ;D

got a used 650 thats coming up for sale this weekend if your interested but no frame I'm afraid. oh its not crash tested but grippatank diy frames look good for around £500...

with regards to mounting them as long you have either very large (150mm square) steel plates under body work or have box section steel in line with the frame under the van with hi-tensile bolts it will hold remember if you're going to hit anything at speed the van will be totalled as it will either rupture the floor inside or worst case buckle the chassis.

as a note just don't tear arse around with anything above a 650 as it will be felt all over the van...

Quite agree with your comments re accident and damage to the van, but my point has more to do with the safety of the occupants than whether or not the van is written off. Certain vans (including the dispatch/scudo/expert) have a 'step' at the front of the load bay, this step is in fact a cross member at the back of the cab and forms a major part of the cabs structural strength. In a van like this, it would be virtually impossible for a flat tank, properly strapped down, to to get past that. That same step would not impede the forward progress of an upright tank at all, and as im sure most of us would realise, the consequences of a 650l tank coming into the cab area would not be good :'(.

Agreed a flat tank is the way forward for overall load safety but it does dominate a large footprint I think it's all down to what the van ultimately is going to carry but I would completely rule out the upright...

I have a 400l upright at the moment; just want something with more capacity.

Never thought about getting a flat tank; I'd still want a frame of some sort; is that possible??

I have been using a flat 800 litre tank but have an upright 500 sitting in the garden, patiently waiting to be installed instead. I will take some barrells with me on the busier days, spreading the load a bit..

I read about others on hear mentioning the space issue, but i don't really see it myself. I have a lwb transit connect, not a particularly big van, but i manage fine with my 500l flat tank. Granted a 650l will take up a good bit more floor space, but presumably with a 650l tank you will have a bigger van and also, the 650 is shallower than a 500, so more space above it. Same goes for the 400l flat tank, only more so, as it is only 36cm deep.

I'm sure there will be a steel fabricator or engineering works nearby you who will weld up a frame for your tank.

Ask them for a quote.
