Chicken or Egg ? Which comes first ?
« on: April 04, 2006, 11:37:44 am »
Just curious about how some of you guys go about staffing new commercial contracts.

Do you take people on with the promise of work in the future or do you win the business first and then figure out how you are going to staff it ?

To date I have worked new jobs to learn the ins and outs before handing on to somebody else but I don't really want to continue down this route as it ties me & other key people down and is slowing down the growth of the company.

I also find that if I take people on on limited hours with the promise of more work in the future they tend not to stay to long especially if something else comes along offering more hours. Also people who ring up on spec looking for work are looking for work NOW because invariably if I contact them at a later stage they have got something else organised.

Look forward to hearing your experiences

heres an idea,  i do this myself .interview people, keep them on file get them to fill an application form out  and when a job comes up in the next couple of weeks ,ring around some will have moved on ,others will still available so you got staff ready

HI THERE

this is always such a difficult thing, do you resource up and then get the work in or the other way round, sell first then resource.

well if you talk to any finance deaprtments, then they will say

sell first, then resource up for the work, as it comes in .

it means that your existing resource will be over stretched during that period, but it is character building

if you resource first, you can have overheads, and no increase in revenue to cover the overheads.  therefore eating at the profitline

You can do it either way. Both are a headache and you'll just end up muddling through somehow. Peronally I get the business and then do the work myself to get it off the ground, then I recruit.
