Why does it take that long nat? Iv heard you can manually submit your pages to google, would that quicken it up?

There's loads of ways to speed it up - but even if Google includes you in its index immediately you can track your rankings (Use a tool like this one:
http://moonsy.com/google-keyword-rank-checker/ ) and you'll see over the first couple of months your rankings will steadily improve even if you're not making changes to the site.
Google is suspicious of newly registered domains - especially if you only register for one year - registering the domain for 2 or more years (Most registrars allow you to go up to 10 years) will instantly help rankings. Older websites often get preference too,.. it takes a while before you can overtake even some mediocre websites if they're well established.
Google also takes time to find any backlinks you have and to figure out your social status from your Facebook/twitter/Google+ pages you have. Using social media to promote a new website (Without spamming too many links!) can get your rankings up where they should be much quicker too.
Registering for a Google Places listing, and including your website link on that listing can give a big boost to local search rankings too.
