I have just finished cleaning three rug at home. Although they look good and my clients always seam happy I have often wonderd how they would compair to having them cleaned at a rug cleaning plant as this would free up some time to do other things. Has anyone ever used one and are they value for money

From what I have gathered they are very very expensive. I was talking to one plant and I nearly had a heart attack at the price! But like everything you get what you pay for and the quality of the clean must be fantastic.

Most custy's wouldnt go for it (I mean your average custy of course) as you have to put your bit of profit on top too. Only really for very expensive rugs, where they want the best and wil pay for it! For a lot less they can get a clean rug by you that will look a lot better!

I had a plant when I was in California and may end up sorting one out over here. So I was surprised that the comment is that they are very expensive. I am not questioning it at all as I dont know just surprised. We usually cleaned the area rugs for about 1/4 of the price that the techs would then charge their customer. This way the rugs were cleaned properly and the techs had it easy as they had more time to do anything else. Lavinia, may I ask how you clean the rugs. There are rare occasions and rare people I know but on the whole you will get a much better result from those who are cleaning them all day long and have all the right "stuff" to clean them with. I have rugs  sent to me to be cleaned because of the way I clean them as I am sure a lot of company's do. That way we are all happy, I get mine so to speak and the tech gets his.... At the end of the day it is money for almost nothing so the profit to the tech is way higher than anything else he is cleaning. Best, Dave.

We clean rugs for a number of Oriental rug shops and we also get work from a couple of dry cleaners. We charge at £1 sq ft plus vat. For that we offer rug dusting then extraction cleaning and stain removal. It's a thorough job and we get no complaints. The shops charge about £2.20 - £2.50 sq ft. One charges £4.75 and though they send in less work than the others they are actually making more money overall. We charge extra for collection an delivery. Time and transport cost are becoming a serious expense. Now with the M1 roadworks I expect to have to loose on hour or two out of each delivery journey.

Rug cleaning is not without pitfalls. Quite a number of rugs are of very high value. At the moment I have a 4m x 3m fine  Persian wool and sik carpet that needs a large stain removing. I know from experience the red will explode into the cream silk if it possibly can. With a replacement cost of around £17000 we need to take every precaution we can to avoid problems.

I must say rug cleaning is more lucretive than cleaning carpets the only problem i find is picking up and delivering. However i charge around £30.00 for a small harth rug and about £60.00 for a large one approx 12x7 i must say i would rather clean 4 rugs a day it is a lot easier no moving furniture normally the results are very good. Keep it up.

thanks for all your comments, I think that I will carry on cleaning them myself as I do tend to get job satisfactoin from it. rugs always look better when they have been cleaned where as I have cleaned some carpets that don't look any differant. I charge £2.50 a sf to take of site but that includes collection & delivery.
