Hi there I couldn't get on to the forum for the last 7 days as it said I was banned for 7 days!

Could you please tell me why?

Maybe they thought you were a Wolves fan mate. They're not allowed to post on here without close supervision from their medical staff.   Just change the info on your profile and claim to be a Chelsea fan. Nobody will take any notice of what you post then.

I had a look on the ban list and couldn't see anything there.  I only banned one person recently for 7 days, and he's banned, so I don't think I banned you by accident.

But even if I had, it would show on the ban register, but it's not.

So I'm not sure what happened?  I'm not very technically minded though.

I just logged in from my laptop and went back to normal

Sometimes, Hector gets banned. I think this is necessary because he's weird and wears pointy hats. A Leeds fan too. Spot 'em a mile off.

Right, I think I know what I'm doing wrong.  I'm banning on IP numbers.  That ban you're talking about was for someone else and maybe you shared the same IP number as him, so you ended up with the ban too.

I don't think so?  Maybe?  I dunno?  But it's the only thing that I can think of that caused this.

I'm not such a techie person but IP numbers usually stay with the same user for a while until the ISP re-assigns them periodically (for security purposes).  I know that a new IP address was assigned after a connection break with dial-up but I'm not clear if this happens with broadand.  Some broadband providers offer a fixed IP address for an extra fee but that's not the sort of thing that most people will want as it's most useful if running a server. The IP address can reveal which ISP is providing the connection and which town/area the connection is from.  So if looking at only part of the IP address, maybe it's possible to ban someone with the same ISP in that same general area.

It looks up your IP address and can glean general information from that.
