Hi,

I have a system using RO first which then through resin to finish as I used to have TDS of 300 from the tap.

I recently moved house and I was really please feeling very lucky that the TDS is now 60-65.

I am now thinking of bypassing my RO system and just producing my water using a resin (will be buying a second canister method)  This will help reduce waste water as on a meter, and will fill my tank up much quicker.

What level TDS would you have to consider DI only ?

If you have got an r o why not just use it you will still be saving on resin and as far as waste goes remember the saving on water  will still be more than  the resin you will save. I just cannot understand the obsession  on saving waste water. Its not a big cost.In fact using a R O only which should bring you tds to 6 will produce better water on its own with out DI.

your RO and yopu want to change the membrane?

Once you change the membranes you'll get less than 10 if your tap is 60....
You may find it low enough not to worry about using resin...

I'd say try it- DI only. See how you go with costs and time and you could always get new filters and membranes if it's costing you more.

I've used a twin DI only set up for 10 years with a tap TDS of between 70 and 90 (currently 76). I use a 400ltr van mount & one fill of one vessel will last me 5 weeks. I use 11ltr vessels & so can almost achieve three fills per 25KG bag of resin. based on 48 working weeks & 2.5 fills per bag of resin I use 3.84 bags per year. Lets round that up to 4 bags per year & a rough cost of £75 per bag = total year cost for resin of £300.

Not bad at all considering I can fill/top up anywhere, no waste, no RO, no membranes, no holding tank & associated gubbins to freeze up in winter. I just pull up after work, plug hose into tank to fill for next day & that's it!

The benefits of the DI only outweigh the minute monetary saving 10 to 1!!

Same here D.I only, 4 bags a year. Filling up anywhere saves on the water bill

i make my 15 ltr resin di last 3 months plus with a tds of 75 /1000 ltrs water per week

Just carry on using the r/o as long (as it is having a noticeable effect) as well as your di. Your r/o needing filters changed may well have put the tds reading higher than you would use alone, but it is still a hell of a lot lower than out of the tap. If your di resin is having to take the ppm down from say 15-20 to 0, it will last a lot longer than taking it down from 65 to 0. Once the r/o is no longer doing anything, then think about using di only.

Personally, i would keep with the r/o.
