Can't get streaks off glass, any advice
« on: March 17, 2014, 12:32:43 pm »

Hi Guys, i WFP the windows on a house with a brand new extension and new triple glazed windows, the trouble
is on one of the windows there are these what look like several water marks or streaks that run from the top
seal to about 3/4 down the glass, when the windows are dry after cleaning these runs or streaks are more apparent,  the owner tells me she spoke to the glazing company who fitted the windows and that they said it was due to the rendering or plaster put on the wall around the window, and where plaster had got on the glass and was left on to long before being cleaned off, lime or such in the plaster had damaged the glass.
is there anyone on the forum who's experienced anything like this, and if so is there a way of fixing it.

Best Regards
Lal

There are a few products that you could use like OilOff. Try looking at the WCW website.
Be careful that you don't end up in the middle of a dispute between the homeowner and the window company.

this is what i have done in the past... spray VIAKAL (available at supermarkets) on an old flocked brush and scrub the stain for a few minutes (no water flow) then rinse with pure

this has worked for me.
WE CLEAN BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT WITH WATER FED POLE WHEN WORKING AT HEIGHT.

You are quite right in saying its the rendering and its not difficult to get off I have found this on many new builds. What I use is Doctor Power its sold by these TV marketing in stores e g ASDA it has a small sponge included all you do is wet the glass apply a small amount with this sponge and polish in circles make sure you get into the corners. Make a fuss and take time for your money. Then rinse off and clean trad. You can apply a second apply if needed. I charge 5 quid a square meter as its a restoration job. There are times you cannot see this stuff as its looks as if its build up on the glass, when wet you cannot see it. Many time you can feel it but not see it. If you trad you can feel the squeegee going over the build up.Its an oxide and there are many of them in water running of stuff as a sediment. Mercuric oxide, calcium oxide, lead oxide but to name a few. Good luck. Another tip is to add a small amount of citric acid crystals to the Doctor Power ( you can buy this from any chemist.) Its acid but not harsh as its used in hair and skin products. This will stop it reforming again.

I have a few properties with windows like that.
Unless the customer asks I just clean them as usual.
If the customer asks I tell them its in the glass and can be very expensive to remove
with no guarantees.
Usually that's as far as it goes.

Try Unger rubout or ruboff.
Sorry can't quite remember what it was called but I've some in the van and it's really good.

nice one, little waffle cloth not a hope for this problem, i have removed them with a descaler and damp magic eraser pad provided the staining on the glass was not there to long, i have come across windows where the staining was there for years and found it impossible to remove, there is a guy near us who can polish scratches out of glass, he told me that he can remove some but also found it impossible to remove the effervescence staining that has been there for years as it etches into the glass substrate.

Rubout and it's very good for hard water / mineral staining
