Topical v impreg on slate
« on: February 27, 2014, 11:44:22 pm »
Whats your thoughts on using a topical sealer on rough slate as opposed to an impreg.

With the main benefit being its easier for the homeowner to clean as a topical will help "smooth" the rough texture of the slate.

Did one yesterday hence the question. Only issue was some smoother areas of the tile had more shine under natural light

Thanks
Mark

PERSONALLY....I think a Topical sealer for Slate is correct and the right seal for the job. Others may think differently.
Lithofin do Slate Seal, not my favourite seal, but the customer likes the end result. I use Lantania products, In my opinion, there are the best available at the moment, I am sure others have their favourites, you will find Topical sealers difficult to remove when you come to clean it off....but thats a whole different topic, which has been discussed many MANY times before! ;D

We will use either a topical or a colour enhancing impregnator depending on whether the customer wants a sheen to the tiles or not.

We do a sample area of both and let them choose.

I feel even matt topical finishes still make the floor look artificial but its the customers choice.

In commercial premises there is the traffic lane wear with a topical so we go for impregnator if practical.
