MAX price paid for van/car
« on: February 19, 2014, 06:51:21 pm »
so guys whats the maximum amount you ve ever paid for a van or car?

mine is £1,400(kangoo bought 4 years ago). ;D

before the kangoo id never paid more than £800 for a car/van.all of them have been at least 10 years old and usually last me around 4 or 5 years with minimum repairs to keep them on the road.

ive spent over 2 grand on poles, brushes and goosenecks and this time ive got 4 or 5 grand to spend on my next van.

i bought a 2.5 V6 car for a grand nearly 2 years ago and spent £2,500 on 2 drum kits(electronic and acoustic kits and cymbals! ;D).

ive never felt the need to spend much on vehicles as i have a good garage that have been servicing all my vans and cars for over 20 years now and are pretty cheap.

obviously im a bit wary about spending so much on a van that only does 3000 miles a year max but i need a bigger van that will last me 5 years.

the way some of you are talking on another thread you d think the only van ill get with 5 grand is a "lemon"! ::)roll ;D

this is a big investment for me.after shelling out on carbon poles and all my other equipment, new 500L tank and
frame and getting it vinyl wrapped etc ill have spent over 10 GRAND on van and equipment just to clean windows!! ;D ;D

price higher/work harder!

£14,500

Seat leon Fr TDI 170bhp

4 months old with 2000 miles on it.

It's giving me grief now. Lol. It is 5 years old though. Great car.

About half that for my current van.

I paid £7500 five years ago for an 1 year old Dispatch with 15000 miles on the clock.
It was around the time of the crash and you could get a good van on the cheap.

I paid £80 for a Talbot Alpine a long time ago, I thought it was a bad car until I had saved up for an Austin Montego  :o

You never got the pleasure of owning a Leyland Marina then? I never did but the company I worked for had a fleet of company cars half Marinas' and half Cortinas. I know of a few who resigned when they were presented with their new Marina. There were some horror stories with those.

I had a Hillman Avenger (£80) and dreamed of owning a Marina. Then I bought one, an 1800 TC (I think).. loved it!!

i dont think im tight at all but ive never had to spend much on vehicles.i look after them and keep them nice and clean.a few little repairs here and there.

maybe ive just been lucky!

the thought of spending say £15,000 on any car or van just doesnt interest me.id rather go on a few decent holidays and buy some new furniture and electronic gadgets for my flat!

take the car i bought for a grand a few years ago.its virtually immaculate with heated leather seats, aircon etc and the 2.5 V6 engine has some guts!i absolutely love driving it after using the van all day!its done just over 100,000 miles but i reckon its got another 20,000 or 30,000 miles left in it for sure!i hammer it sometimes as well! ;D

Daz,

Buy a 5 / 6 year old Toyota Hiace... Very very reliable and they hold their value.

I had a 2001 Hiace - I bought it 2 years ago for £1600 and sold it at the weekend for £1950 !!!   It never ever went wrong in the 2 years I had it... I only sold it as I needed a LWB (I have a Vivaro now) - but my next van will be a newer LWB Hiace.

Car-cost me a lot! I did have to save up for 3 years for it though. Filling up costs more than some guys have paid for vehicles in this thread!

Van was about £15k

Daz, you're missing an important element bud-the money you spend on a van is tax deductible. Try not to look at as £5k coming out of your pocket but a £5k spend on company vehicle-you just happen to own the company.
That's why lads do leasing, (It is slightly different but you get my point-i hope) because the whole lot spent is tax deductible that year.

I know you're not doing many miles but you're out in it all day, right?
Lots of little journey's, probably on a cold engine, will do different damage to your engine than long journey's.
And your suspension will be shot from carrying weight all the time.
A high miler may be ok, it may not. That's the trouble with 2nd hand vans-you just have to hope for the best.

I'd say you'd be better off with a 1,200kg payload Expert/Dispatch/Scudo. They're great little vans. Will carry your weight and will be bigger than your Kangoo.

Seriously though, I think the times are changing with regard to buying second hand vehicles.

You may pick up a 'bargain' tdci Mondeo only to find that it wants a new set of injectors at £700.00 + labour to fit, not including diagnosis charges. What about £350 for a reconditioned injector pump?

I'm not sure you can risk buying an old banger these days unless you know the vehicle.

Old diesel engines were bullet proof. Nowdays with all this computerised technology, you are left very vunerable if things go wrong. See how many current model vehicles are advertised on ebay being broken for spare parts with no accident damage. Are many of these being 'written off' due to not being economical to repair?

I have made the point before - how long before petrol engines find their way back into the commercial market as diesels are becoming to expensive to maintain after the warranty period expires?
