traffic van problem

hi ive started to get a nocking noise when I use my steering wheel in the van seems like its comeing from the front right hand wheel any ideas is it safe to keep driveing ???

It will be the Tie rod end, I have had both sides replaced so far, it is a weakness on the traffic.    Cost about £16 for the part, and an hours labour to fit.  ;D

Hopefully not the CV joint, as they can be bugger when they go. See a car catapult into the air when it went  :o :o

Had the same for the last 6 mths, not the tie rods, been back on numerous occasions and they still cant find the problem. Been assured not a safety issue, seems to be ok for a few days then re occurs. Builder mate has the same with his traffic drivers side frt.

A very good chance its the strut top mount/bearing. Open the bonnet and watch the top of the strut as you turn the wheel from side to side,you may well see movement. It is a well known failing.
Its this type of thing.,

And it makes the clunk noise as an early symptom.

I'm with Samson on this one. However, you never know until you get it checked out.

Lower ball joints can also do some funny things.

A CV joint usually starts with a knocking noise when driving forward/backwards with the steering on full lock. It is usually the result of a split gaitor.

Just thought - check for loose wheel nuts.

Daughter came with a problem like this last month and the one front wheel's nuts hadn't been tightenend when the garage replaced disc pads.

i have a 2003 primastar and mine was doing the same thing knocking now and again but mainly when the van had weight in.
so i booked it in for left hand ball joing and track rod ends.
still knocking, so i changed one of the engine mounts and didnt solve the problem.
im almost sure its a engine mount but a difficult to reach one, i am sending it for repair when i get some free time.

if it sounds like 1 clunk when you reverse or drive on low revs it could possibly be the same.

Mine has just failed its MOT on the track rod ends. £36 for two. They are sided.

the truth is, if you take it to a garage it will probs be trial and error and could end up costing a small fortune.

im going to try getting a mechanic friend to have a good look and listen before deciding what i do.

there shouldn't be trial or error for track rod ends or cv joint, ball joints or wheel bearings pretty easy to check straight away and tell you what it is

The knocking on my van was the top engine mount.
2 bolts had snapped so only one bolt was holding the engine in place so it was knocking everytime i went over a bump.
I only found this out when i seen smoke and hear a loud noise then seen the engine hanging out lol, but only cost £50 to fix
